Often times people suffering from depression and even suicidal thoughts can be outgoing, and look as if all is going their way. However, just beneath the surface lies a quiet danger.
Sad to hear the news about this young man.

Yea I went through tough times when the RE market took a dive and killed my construction business at the time. I used to look at depression and suicide differently until I personally battled it. I still struggle from time to time (especially now that my dad is battling cancer) but I was lucky enough to have a second chance and have built a new business to dive into. Without it, no telling where I would be. I am really just now at a point where I don't mind talking about it.
People who have never dealt with it have no business passing judgement on those that choose the path THF did.

Absolutely

I was also one of those people that thought of suicide as a cowards act. I went through it and wouldn't have been strong enough without help. I can't remember where I read it but the guy described it perfectly. It'seems like being in a burning building and instead of burning, you jump to your death. Sometimes suicide is someone trying to stop the pain the only way they known how. They don't see any other choice. If anyone has thoughts of suicide, please get help. It could be as simple as talking on a random messageboard. Try to fight for one more minute, hour or day. Help WILL come. I promise.

We lost my brother to suicide years ago and there's nothing more confusing than someone you know and love deciding to take their own life. All I can say is for those close to him, it's mandatory that you speak with a professional.

beautifully stated takes real courage to admit self doubt like this

That's sad and I feel for him, his family and friends that know him. Can't imagine the pain/stress/etc he was going through. Will be praying for the family in this time of grieving.
I've seen him post here on the OT and recall seeing his posts on the Recruiting Board not long after I joined TD. Didn't know him personally nor interacted with him here but from his posts, he was a well-liked guy.
May you rest in peace, THF.

This is all very sad. My prayers go out for the repose of his soul and for comfort to his family and friends. God Bless, R.I.P.

Like I said, I have only really been able to speak about it the past year or so. I have apologized to a lot of people and they understood because I wasn't the same. I became a bad introvert which isn't like me at all. I also racked up a lot of posts on here during that time, and believe it or not, this place was a bit of therapy at times.
Don't want to derail this thread anymore, though. Just saying all of that to say I sympathize with TFH and wish he would have had the same path out of it that I did, but I don't fault him for what he did either.

It'd be awesome if we could set up a college fund for his kid. I'd gladly donate some $.

Just read through this thread and my heart goes out to his family and friends. This really hits home as I deal with mental illness in my family and it can be challenging for everyone.
THF seemed like a great guy; thoughts and prayers.

Awesome post man. Proud of ya
As an appraiser at the time, I get it. And that's why they call it wisdom...you gotta live to learn sometimes even if it's acceptance or sympathy for what others might be going through.

Glad to hear you resolved your failures and moved on.

That's a serious thing in modern times, btw. Things like Facebook and Instagram are people's "highlight reels" -- and far too many get depressed comparing themselves.
You're not alone on that one

Most of my issues resolved around perceived personal failures. I call it the Facebook Effect. I looked at all these people and they all seemed so happy. Families, having kids, buying houses, promotions, etc. Nobody seemed to be struggling with what I was until I realized---those people are posting only the highlights and not the lowlights. It's direct marketing to their inner circle.
Too many people try to live someone else's life and don't fulfill theirs. If you're depressed it's probably because you're trying to be something you're not and live up to other people's expectations. Materialism and conspicuous consumption have ruined many people who aren't into the rat race. There are alternatives, everyone deserves to be happy on their own path
