I've got to be honest, I've often wondered this myself.

I'm not questioning evolution, but that seems to be a valid question that you don't see answered often in conversations on the topic.

It's a valid question if you're ignorant enough to think the theory of evolution says we come from apes.

It doesn't.

Possibly. I've been involved in more of these discussions than I can count.

I don't look at it so much as an opportunity to debate, but rather a chance to educate.

I'm just trying to open some minds and stimulate some imaginations here. Of course, I could be completely full of shite. But I would give it a fifty-fifty chance of happening. Men and women are actually becoming more like each other through social conditioning and equal opportunities, for the most part. It is only a matter of time before medical technology and genetics catch up and make it easy for geneticists to manipulate sexuality at will.

That is because being fat is also a choice and not in your genes.

Genes play a role. I'm naturally very thin. I generally eat whatever I want with out much thought. I should pay attention more for other health issues, but that's something else entirely. I would have to put conscious effort into force feeding myself several meals a day in a way to maximize caloric intake to get fat. Other people are the opposite. At some point what specific actions you take at the moment are a choice. Your tendencies are something else entirely.

I should have been more clear - I'm not talking about gorillas and humans.

I'm talking about species where the are incredibly close predecessors that still exist today. Natural selection would seem to imply that those inferior species would be overtaken by the evolved forms. I guess my question is better framed as this - over hundreds of thousands of years, I wouldn't think there would be so many "close cousins" in the animal and plant kingdom.

Thats honestly a more reasonable question. The easiest answers (as there are many of them) are that

1)The biological requirements to be successful are not absolute and depend on the situation the species finds itself in. So gorillas live in a different place that humans, therefor they dont have the exact same influences and enviornment. Additionally you can solve the riddle of survival in an almost infinite number of ways. So a leopard and a gorilla can both thrive in a jungle without one ultimately being forced to evolve into the other.

2) This is really the more important one (and i probably shouldnt have even gone into the first one.) but 100,000 years aint shite in terms of evolution.

Frankly, Evolutionist have a lot more to answer for than Rush. Evolutions is based on pure "I see what I want to see" BS. Of course, we are really talking about mAcroevolution. MIcroevolution is just small changes within a population caused by mutation or some other BS. However, this shite they are saying is new, is already programed into the cell. We have information in us that allows us to adapt to our environments. That's just good design. Microevolution isn't new information and it certainly doesn't prove macroevolution.

The real problem with evolution is the Big Bang. Scientist know the Big Bang is BS so they keep trying to reinvent it while still calling it the Big Bang. Frankly, it's fun to watch and listen to such folks. On top of that, I think red shift is BS for determining distances to stars.

100 years from now, all the BS that most of you called "settled science" will be proven to be what it is. Evolution, the idea that we came from a pool of slime, will be one of the first to go.

Wait. Why do you think it stopped?

I think humans are evolving faster than ever, it's just not in a physical state. Our brain allows us to keep evolving. Physically we can't fly, but we found a way to do so. There was a time when the only way to communicate with someone long distance was to send them a letter.

Today we can call up people anywhere. They can be in the Democratic Republic of Congo and you can use facetime to have a face to face conversation. It wasn't until right after WWI that humans had the ability to keep someone from dying from an infection. The world population took off after the invention of antibiotics. Those are the ways humans are evolving today..

To think humans were once another animal that steadily became human is silly, I think humans evolved by continuing to discover their capabilities. What about neanderthals? Those idiots's DNA were almost just like humans, but humans had the ability to get rid of them.

I'm not reading the eight pages to see if anyone has answered this yet.

The basic idea is not that individuals living today can suddenly transform. They don't. The idea is that all creatures have children, and mutations happen. Most mutations are bad, when that happens we call it a birth defect and feel sad.

But every now and then there's a mutation that at least isn't bad, for example there have been a couple of guys with six fingers on one hand who wound up pitching in the majors (Google it). Sometimes there's a really good one that improves survival and therefore lets that child have even more grandchildren than normal. And the descendants of *that* child will tend to carry the mutation and spread. If it happens enough the descendants with the new "good" mutation will gradually take over.

We've seen this happen over an over in species with short lifespans, like bacteria for example, but also certain kinds of birds and moths.
