do you not think that the rental car company will know who rented that car from them?

I run through the ones on the Sam Houston Pkwy from time to time (there are areas where you cannot pay at a tollbooth). I have only received a bill one time though.

No, they give your CC# to the company.

I was in Dallas in a rental for work, and went through a few tolls, racked up $20 in fees, then had to go online and get the bill. It just charged my work card.

I did it in Mass all the way from Boston to Worcester. The rental company just sent me a letter saying they added the toll cost that they got assessed by Mass for me running the turnpike booths without a tag to my bill, which I then expensed to the company.

Same thing happened in Colorado and thought I'd be billed but nothing ever came of it. Just did the same thing in Houston a month ago (except with my own car) and I'm still waiting for my ticket in the mail...

Most rental cars in an area that has a lot of toll roads have tags in their car. I think last time I did it, it was 8.99 service charge, then each toll was charged to my card.

Most of those automatically take pictures/scan license plates or barcode tags depending on the state.

This. I got a letter in the mail a year and a half later from a Texas toll that I apparently ran through outside of Dallas. They had a nice snapshot of my license plate.

When you go across the Golden Gate Bridge, they bill you...and they also find you if you are in a rental. js

Only if you drive back into SF. If you go north on it there is no toll.

I just try to avoid toll roads if I can when renting. It can be a headache with the different service fees they charge renters.

First off it is "through" anyway, and clearly he was joking.

Depends on the jurisdiction. If they're enforcing it they'll send a bill to the rental company, which will pass it through to you.

But if you do it in your car and they send you a bill, the most they can do is more like a red light camera.

For example, in Maryland they'll send you letters and threaten to ruin your credit rating for failure to pay a civil judgement, but in reality FICO ignores anything under $100. So if the total bill from your evil activities is under that much, you're probably good.
