re: Rules of carrying a gun

If you draw your gun in self defense, your next move had better be to shoot the guy or he's shooting you first. However, don't be a fricking hero. Let me repeat that: don't be a fricking hero. It's self defense, not Rambo. You only draw if you feel your life is threatened. If you do shoot, your first phone call is to your lawyer.

In OP's hypo - guy walks into convenience store, points gun at clerk, can I shoot him? - the law is clearly yes. I don't know where you're getting hung up.

can I pull my gun on him and call the cops?
ETA: You can't even quote the OP without twisting the words...Why should someone believe anything else you say

We've moved past that. We're onto whether or not you can shoot him.

He's hung up because he thinks that one guy pointing a gun at another is not necessarily a threat to the person;s life. He's either trolling or he's one of the stupid people that thinks it's ok to rob someone at gunpoint as long as you don't kill them. The fact that people are stupid enough to think that way is frightening.

Why you keep poking the troll is beyond me.
Yes. I. ME. Who uses the OT as a dumping ground for the random thoughts that enter my head...am calling him a troll.

Put yourself in the burglar's shoes....
Life must be pretty damn shitty if you're desperate enough to rob a gas station at gunpoint for a few hundred dollars.
At that point, probably "no fricks given"
A customer pulls out a gun, points it at his chest, and yells "FREEZE SUCKER!, this is a citizen's arrest"
The first thing that burglar would do would be to point the gun at that customer and start shooting.....

It would certainly be a tough situation. Do nothing and hide, then hear the shot that kills the clerk. You'll probably try to help after the robber leaves or give a statement to the police. You'll probably end up learning more about the clerk, his/her life, maybe working to better themselves, maybe had kids at home. You'll tell yourself you did the right thing. Maybe even do a good job of rationalizing it in your head. But I can't imagine any normal person wouldn't carry some degree of guilt with them for a long time knowing they probably could have done something and didn't. Then there's always the robber continuing to prey on people.

I think his point is he doesn't feel it's worth the risk to shoot someone unless HIS life is in immediate danger. And I can't blame him for feeling that way in this day and age. He's not being stupid, but actually covering his own arse. Like I said before...rule #1 is I'm #1.

Don't know why the OP didn't just post in the OB in the first place...
I'll add a couple things:
1. If you unholster your gun, you should use it if you KNOW the perp is armed, or you feel he MAY be armed. If you can see both of his hands and he isn't holding a weapon, you don't HAVE to use your gun. People who say "you should use it if you draw it" mean to say "you should be READY to use it if you draw it."
2. Every situation is different.

Boom Roasted asked how pointing a gun and robbing the clerk does not put the clerk's life in danger. He said Boom Roasted was assuming the robber would kill the clerk, presumably disagreeing with that.

That's why customer shouldn't say shite. Just shoot him. (This is assuming it gets to that point. Like others have said, I wouldn't just go charging in without talking a moment to assess my own safety, other options, etc).

If he refuses to surrender are you willing to shoot him? If they send you to prison, will that be OK?
Need to think through all the possibilities before you take the significant responsibility of playing Lone Ranger.
My dad always said, "If you carry a gun, you will eventually use it."
Come to grips with that before you start carrying, because most people who have killed someone will tell you they never forget anything about the shooting. If you can shoot and be happy, then you (maybe) will stay happy with the killing. If you shoot and regret it, you will probably always regret it.
Either way, I can promise you - you will never forget it.
