Why are the feds looking to support this project? Why is this more important that other infrastructure projects that would impact more residents? Are projects like this common and the reason why current infrastructure is not properly maintained?

Planners released details today of the proposed route for Baton Rouge’s planned 3.4-mile streetcar that will link LSU to downtown.

Heading north, the proposed route travels along Nicholson Drive, which becomes St. Louis Street at Interstate 10, then utilizes Europe Street for one block to connect to St. Ferdinand Street, which becomes Fourth Street. The route then continues on Fourth Street in a north-south direction to the northernmost stop on the route—North Street at the State Capitol. The streetcar would then turn around and use the same route in a southbound direction.

The proposed route is one of several steps city officials and their planning team have to complete as they rush to secure funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the project. The city-parish has already received federal planning funds to design the project, but it now has to complete a detailed and lengthy process in order to qualify at the federal level for some of the $100 million in funds it will take to actually build the line, now officially called TramLink BR.

Time is of the essence because the Obama administration, which leaves office at the end of the year, has indicated its support for the project.

Yea, I don't know how much a 3.4 mile rail should cost but 100 millions seems awful rich...

Baton Rouge has completely changed in that time. There are near weekly festivals and concerts downtown. There are tons of apartment complexes downtown. There's a grocery store, a great strip of bars, restaurants, a theatre, museums, ect.

Also, allowing people to more easily park in downtown, where parking is plentiful, and go to LSU sporting events, where parking is a premium, is a huge plus as well.

The bigger question.

Just who owns a large chunk of the land identified in the route plans?

I would lay odds on some amorphous holding company that makes it difficult to find the names of the locally connected politicians and developers who have been scarfing up the lots just prior to this being "announced"...

And the developments between LSU and downtown are going to be huge and really nice.

Compared to New Orleans, yes. Compared to most other cities its size, not so much. Compared to what it once was 10 and 20 years ago, absolutely not.

$100,000,000.00 to build a 3.4 mile street car line that is not flexible and will replace a bus that is offered for free that nobody rides.

Humans are brilliant.

To put this into perspective, the government could instead use that $100m to give everyone free Uber rides back and forth.

It's 3.4 miles but let's say each ride is $15. Let's put the un-used money into low risk bonds to get some return.

That's enough money to give 1,000 rides A DAY, EVERY DAY, for eternity. That's with the driver's pay and vehicle upkeep included. Think about that for a second.

It's more of a Shelbyville idea.
