Got on in Flagstaff and went Kingman. Nice drive through the desert. Road was in good condition. There was one place to stop. It had all the trappings of the 1960’s. Very enjoyable.

Taking HWY 1 the entire length of the state will beat your teeth out.

That’s why I’m contemplating taking a bit of time to do it.

Closest thing I’ve done is driving down Kennelworth from Perkins to Highland.

Has anyone here made the complete Route 66 trip? Was it worth it in modern day? How long did you take to hit the good spots? Did you start in Chicago or LA?

When I was a kid we took Route 66 from St. Louis to Flagstaff and back several times to visit family in Arizona.

You can't take the entire trip on the original Route 66 but 85% of it is passable while there are portions in some states where the road is impassable and you have to use Interstate 40. I know you can take parts of the original highway in California, Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma.

Williams, AZ has done a good job making a section of 66 look like it did back in the day. Also a good jumping off point to the Grand Canyon.

NC 12 is a great drive on the Outer Banks. Start in Corolla and drive south to Hatteras. Use the ferries and you can follow 12 all the way to Cedar Island.

SC 700 out to Wadmalaw Island and SC 174 to Edisto Island are nice drives.

US 17 between Myrtle Beach and Jacksonville doesn't have the best scenery but it gives you access to Charleston, Savannah, and the lowcountry/barrier islands/beaches.

My nephew did it from the official starting point in Chicago to the Santa Monica pier. And he did it entirely on his bicycle! He had a sleeping bag and camped along the way. He was about 21 at the time so a perfect age to do something like that. I think he also stayed a few nights at people's places using the couch surfing app.

It would be interesting to see how his body composition changed during that time period. How long did it take him?

My husband wanted to do it, and we decided to take a short part of it as a test drive. New Mexico and Arizona were interesting and still have some original buildings and road grade. That was enough for him.

(Follow the old trials across the Great Plains to Santa Fe on the olde Santa Fe Trail routes. )

I think he's enjoyed more of the old Lincoln Highway which isn't as 'known' but still goes through the old parts of cities and towns. In Ohio, there are some places where it's still a lane and a fraction wide and looks to be the original tar and gravel.

Route 11 from Louisiana up to the Canadian Border is an interesting look at the thiries and which parts have grown and which parts haven't.

I've been to the Blue Whale in Catoosa a few times, I don't think there is an alternate name for the road, just Route 66 still.

Pretty sure I've seen sections of it in every state it passed through. Honestly, trying to travel the whole length doesn't hold a lot of appeal to me. I'd rather go explore some nearly deserted Western highways.

Any timeframe on this reopening? Hasn't it been closed for about three years or so? Is it just a permanent deal at this point?

You have to remember that a lot of it will be spent in Illinois and Missouri.

There’s some pretty neat things to see in both states.

…if you know where to look.

I will say this. If you try, put Shamrock, Texas on the stop list.

Years ago when my family would go on vacation out west, we'd usually pass through Shamrock. There was a homestyle buffet restaurant that was legit. It's probably gone now.

What other highways are pretty cool to do from start to finish?

OT'ers - 30A

Depending on what you call cool but Natchez Trace has some interesting points or Million Dollar Highway

Add M22 in northwestern Michigan. Awesome part of the country.

Drove on parts of it in New Mexico couple of weeks ago. Drive thru Tucumcari and stayed in the Blue Swallow motel. Had dinner and breakfast Del’s. Recommend both.
