Same in my business.
EBR / City of Baton Rouge just awarded a low bid of $16K for SAN maintenance when everybody else was at $50K. The stupid woman said, " we're gonna save some money".
Good luck with that.

Is $265/sq. pretty standard nationwide? Does it vary if you live in a high dollar area as opposed to a more rural area? Can it just be used as an average?

No such thing as a nationwide price. Different areas will have different building codes, permit prices, roof types, etc so it will vary.
You also have to take into account roof pitch. a 10/12 is going to be more labor intensive than a 5/12.
It's a good average though for Louisiana without seeing OP's actual roof.
Even insurance companies have different payout rates for different parts of the country.

My house was 50 squares, I bought all the materials and paid a crew $60 a square to do the labor. And they gave me a 5 year warranty.

Roofer in Lafayette told me $200 for three tab, $220 for architectural. Materials and labor.
More if the roof has a steep pitch.

I had 6 quotes from $225-$265 per square in the past few weeks. That's for labor/materials/cleanup.

I had 4 quotes ranging from $210-$235. Maybe it's you that's to high.

For a 3 tab 25 yr shingle I pay a little under $200/sq. If the roof is one of my own properties my roofer will go even lower. That certainly isn't market rate, but sheesh I didn't know people paid some of the prices that have been posted.

I know. These shingles aren't lasting the 30 years they say they will. Yeah, the 2 roofing companies I know have 30 or 50 year.

Maybe so. Or maybe those guys are under insured and not licensed properly. It's way more common than you think since an improvement job has to be over $10,000 before it requires any type of license.
I know what it cost to add roof coverage to comp and GL and it's not cheap at all. The only ways around it are not to report it during an audit, set your price to cover it (what I do), or just not carry that coverage which makes their insurance useless if you need it.
Just saying to check all of this before proceeding with hiring anyone unless you're OK with rolling the dice.
BTW, one of the reasons insurance for roofing is so high isn't just because of the danger of roof work. It's also because a little undiscovered leak can lead to mold issues which is VERY expensive to remedy.

yes to this...... we require Our roofers to have all their insurance,or we will not use them, very few roofing crews have ALL their insurance

And if you have a 3/12 pitch roof or less you need some extra underlayment to keep the roof from leaking. I see it ALL the time...

EVERY flat roof I have ever seen leaks. I hate roll roofing but I would be lying if I said I didn't make a lot of money off of them. Not only fixing the leaks, but also repairing the damage inside, and the mold remediation.
It never fails that when the banks send us to a house with a flat roof it has a leak somewhere. I charge $325 per sq for it because they pay it and there is always more to it than to remove and replace and it's a messy job.
