A large portion of the Miller Hill Mall's roof collapsed Tuesday morning, leading to an evacuation of the 50-year-old shopping center.

Barnes and Noble manager Scott Skar said he was opening the store around 9 a.m. when he heard a loud noise, "like something rolling across the roof."

He saw out in the mall concourse snow had fallen in at a depth that reached the roof.

"It was shocking to see open sky," Skar said.

No injuries were reported, said Kelli Latuska, a spokeswoman for the city of Duluth, but water and gas lines have been turned off, as the scent of gas was in the air.

The collapse appears to affect at least five businesses inside the mall, including Applebee's, Express and a Caribou Coffee kiosk. The Miller Hill Mall is the only shopping mall in the city

You may be thinking of when the roof collapsed at the old Minneapolis Metrodome (former Vikings stadium).

possibly. can't imagine living where there's enough snow to collapse a roof.

Pretty sure that's a scene out of the day after tomorrow.

In the case of the Metrodome, it had a canvas roof and the weight of the snow finally caused the canvas to tear and collapse one Sunday morning in 2010, a day the Vikings had a home game scheduled there.

roofs in the south have to factor in snow weight for design....yu would think they have to over design in Minnesota....

He is Louisiana, they factor in emergency overflow drains of scuppers to account for rain in excess of what the roof drains can handle or if for some reason the storm/roof drains get a blockage.

these are the spouts you see sticking out of walls of large buildings

Flat roofs in a snowy climate seem as stupid as flat roofs in a super rainy climate.

Young me spent a non-insignificant time at this mall growing up. And the metrodome too for that matter.

Sad.
