Rolling Stone:Ticketmaster caught scalping their own tickets

Music fans’ ire toward Ticketmaster for expensive concert tickets may be somewhat justified, according to a fiery investigation by CBC News and the Toronto Star on Wednesday detailing a secret scalping scheme run by the ticket sales company itself. The two outlets sent journalists undercover as scalpers to a live entertainment convention this summer, where Ticketmaster reportedly pitched them on its underground professional resale program, through which it takes a cut of profits.
Ticketmaster, which is owned by live entertainment juggernaut Live Nation, enlists resellers to grab batches of tickets from its site and then flip them for higher prices on a Ticketmaster-owned, invite-only platform called TradeDesk (touted by the company as “The most powerful ticket sales tool. Ever”), according to the report. Ticketmaster gets extra fees from the pricier resale tickets on top of its fees from selling the original ticket. CBC and Toronto Star journalists were told that despite the existence of a Ticketmaster “buyer abuse” division that looks for suspicious online activity in ticket sales, the company turns a blind eye to its TradeDesk users. A sales representative told one of the undercover journalists that there are brokers with “literally a couple of hundred accounts” on TradeDesk, and that it’s “not something that we look at or report.”

This is nothing new, and it won’t change. I quit going to big concerts/events because of it.

not surprising in the slightest.

Yeah, it's already holy hell enough on big shows. Almost have to get the pre-sale codes to have a chance at decent tickets. And even then, you have to be there the instant it opens up and dive into a Game of Thrones type battle royal.

Don't they own StubHub? I know they set aside some of the best tickets to sell through there instead of ticketmaster.com

damn, rolling stone piggy backs off other people's work and you give them the credit?

Heck, LSUs' "arrangement" with StubHub gives the athletic dept. a SECOND bite of every re-sold ticket. So, LSU has technically become a for profit re-seller, all the while admonishing their own season ticket holders for doing virtually the same thing....the hypocrisy ! lol

This.....don't think the bands and their managers are not in on it too.....they put tickets in the hands of StubHub and the like and get a kick-back on the proceeds

Hopefully there are some anti trust issues that some state attorney general will use to try to stop this bullshite. I doubt Trump admin has any interest in stopping it. Not judging the administration on it, I just don't think that would ever be a priority.

Least surprising thing ever. Those websites are such a rip off

Not sure what the big deal is here other than I wish Ticketmaster would just sell the tickets for the price the 'scalpers' are selling them for. People are paying the outrageous prices, so there's a demand. Simple supply and demand.

They should go back to arm bands and camping out.
You could get eight tickets for $120 or so. All the big acts.
Good times...

I'd have been much more shocked if it was discovered that they weren't doing this.

I remember back in the day also going to the service desk at places like Dillards the minute they opened to snag tickets too.

The big deal is they are artificially keeping box office supply low by giving scalpers first chance at the tickets.

Yep. I remember that too.
Also, If you were in the front of the line, you would normally get seats in the first ten rows.

My wife works for a venue. One of the screwed up things they do (Live Nation/Ticketmaster/Promotion type companies, not the venue itself) is sell the shows with different quantities. It's a 15k person venue, but sometimes they only put out 13k tickets so they can call it a sell out and charge more. But even if it sells the 13k, they'll eventually open more and sell those too. They don't let you know that though and make everyone think the tickets are nearly sold out so that they can keep the prices high.
There are still some instances where you can buy directly in person and not pay all the crazy fees. I get tickets for people all the time and you can save 10-15 per ticket just getting them in person instead of online. I just have my wife pick them up while she's at work. Does nothing special other than stop by the box office that is open to everyone.
