We need to make these goddamn trashy-arse truckers drive on separate roads than us. Just like they do in Mexico.

There is no reason that the limit shouldn't be 85 there.

DA FAQ? No way I want Johnny Truck Nuts in his F-450 pulling a 20' trailer going 85 MPH any where near me.

I agree with the 75 MPH speed limit though (I also think they need to set the minimum speed to closer to 60-65)

For 65mph you're right. This chart doesn't have up to 95mph, but it's damn sure not 650'

I feel there should be speed limit brackets based on special licensing, from 55mph up to unlimited, with the higher tiered licensing requiring more rigorous training and more frequent re-testing.

There would need to be laws regarding maximum passing speed, so that you don't have someone going 55 getting passed at 155.

This would extend to vehicles as well. Each vehicle would be given a maximum speed rating class,

Class A - unlimited

Class B - 120 mph

Class C- 70 mph

...or something like that...This would keep some fool from trying to keep pace with a GTR in his jacked up F250

Pretty interesting evidence that speed limits actually can make drivers callous and unaware of their surroundings. Ever notice that if you're driving and you don't know what the speed limit is in the area you naturally drive more cautiously and more aware of your surroundings? Removing speed limits could make things safer period.

In stretches of I-10 in east Texas just this past weekend, trucks were limited to the right lane.

For I-12, it's basically a New Orleans bypass for trucks that don't need to go there. Many trucks use I-12 and it just so happens that it's a good route for many of us in Baton Rouge to bypass New Orleans or from the gulf coast to Texas and back. It really needs to be three lanes in each direction all the way and the state is slowly moving towards it.

What's the design vehicle in your link? I skimmed but didn't see it. It can't be an average car or light truck with a 60 mph braking distance of almost 350 ft. That's way too far.

Right lane = 70 mph speed limit
Left lane = 85 mph speed limit
Trucks = 70 mph speed limit no matter the lane

Driving 70 is snail's pace to me. I rarely go faster than 85 unless I'm needing to pass someone. Going 80 has never felt dangerous.

Politicians fight raising the speed limit tooth and nail... even when it's warranted and recommended by road/traffic engineers.

Fine, let's trust drivers. But, let's make fines and penalties real for impaired drivers.

I like Europe's speed limit. Most are 130km/hr, ~82mph. Trucks had special limits of 100km/hr (62mph).

But what about the innocent people and the children? Is it just slaughter on the highway?

I've always thought the speed limit should be raised, and laws should be more lenient on speed violations, but it should happen in conjunction with the following:

Put the clamps down on tailgating. Set a minimum standard for following other vehicles, and whoever is caught going within that limit, should be stopped, and ticketed.

No 18-wheelers in the left lane. No exceptions. If one is caught driving there, pull them over, and give them a ticket.

Give tickets to anybody in the left lane, and not passing.

I did not read how they came up with those numbers (with an 18 wheeler maybe?), of if they have margins of error etc..

Here is a car and driver test drive for three cars stopping from 100mph. All ~400' (no reaction time added).

That's a test specifically to see how short of a braking distance they could achieve. Traffic engineers design more conservatively.

I'm not sure what the design vehicle is. When designing, the assumption is wet roads with worn tires (not worst case scenario, but plausible). That equation is just what AASHTO recommends to design for to make absolutely sure it's safe.

Texas is pretty much 75 on all major highways as long as it's not going through a town.

i35 is the only major stretch i drive that i can't go 75 for most of it, but that's because SA, Austin, Temple, Waco and DFW stop you from being able to drive 75 for longer than 70 miles at a time.

I10 i think is 80 from West of San Antonio all the way to El Paso

Until they regularly enforce rolling road block laws then it doesn't really matter. People cruising in the passing lane keeps all of this from actually working.

Also, perhaps we could create a Tiered license system in this country that prevents inexperienced or timid drivers from venturing onto the super highways.

Raise the speed limit to 85 and cars will go 105. People want to go faster than the flow of traffic so they aren't stuck behind or next to other cars.
