Awfully convenient opinion of yours.
Drove 10 hours and averaged 19 mpg. Hooked up to a trailer hauling a tractor/implements. About 10k pounds worth of crap and averaged about 17 mpg over the 10 hours back. This trip was in a 2006 Silverado 2500hd with the Duramax. Drove about 75-85 mph consistently both ways.
The only people that this electric truck will appeal to are people that really don't need a truck.

No fricking way. None, unless your return trip was straight down hill.

I get something like 4mpg worse driving back from Lafayette to Baton Rouge than I do driving from Baton Rouge to Lafayette. And that’s in a car not towing a damned thing. You’ve allowed an elevation gradient to lull you into a very silly opinion.

I highly doubt this. I love diesel trucks, and have towed with them many times. They’re the best in the world for pulling heavy shite, but these numbers didn’t happen.

I drive about 200 miles a week to / from work, but also need a truck to put equipment in. I’ll also occasionally have to go off the beaten path.
An all wheel drive truck that doesn’t kill me on gas is extremely appealing.

So there would be no more battery degradation during those 44 miles?
What he’s saying is that 162 miles is pretty close to 50% of 310 miles. You know, what’s reported on their own website?

It was from nw Georgia back to near Lafayette, so on average a lot of it was probably down hill. I'm just going by what the truck's computer put out. It was more like 18.9 and 16.7.
That's not the first time I've done a trip like that. It's always only 2-3 mpg drop. It's not a gas burner, probably would lose more than 10 mpg if it was.

It's actually better than what's on the website

I tow my speed boat this far round trip on any given summer weekend.
With my truck, uses between half and quarter tank of gas

11,000 lbs of towing and my gas SUV’s range will be halved.

Yea, but it'll still be about 250 miles.
11,000 pounds is heavy as frick though. Few people ever pull that much weight at all, much less regularly. Those who do pull that alot, have 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
Eta: that picture in the article of a mustang on a car hauler, that whole getup might weigh 7k lbs, maybe.

Cool then don’t buy a Rivian.
If you’re worried about people buying electric cars then I assume you’re the kind of guy who cares about what other guys wear.
If electric trucks suck then nothing to worry about. If they’re good then ICE trucks will step up their game. WGAF

That’s about a thousand feet of elevation. That’s substantial, even over that distance.

Loaded out bay boat will get you part of the way there.
Then, have you seen how fat people in La are? Load up the family for a fishing trip and you might be pushing it.

Agreed, which is why it was probably only a 2 mpg loss that trip. However, on other similar trips without much of any elevation change, it typically loses no more than 3 mpg.

My 2021 ford F-150 begs to differ. 23 mpg to 13mpg. and thats pulling a 19ft boat. 2.7 ecoboost.

My diesel truck will lose 10mpg easily if towing heavy vs unloaded. If you cherry pick your scenarios (babying unloaded vs towing heavy) is like 24mpg vs 8.5 mpg.

Given the fact that we don’t have enough material to make enough EVs, I wouldn’t worry too much about it for a bit.
But I take your point. Wasn’t thinking of it like that.
