The dog being dead makes this feel potentially more sinister/someone losing their mind then it does two lovers just going out on their own terms together

This is why I’m doubting carbon monoxide. Unless the 2 surviving dogs were somehow in a different part of the house that was unaffected? Idk, two dogs alive, front door left open, wife and husband found in different locations, neither one in bed, pills scattered near the wife. Could it be that Hackman passed suddenly and the distraught wife didn’t want to go on? Dog #3 got stuck in the bathroom with her and had no access to water? I’m struggling to make sense of the front door being open.
