Rhode Island DMV wants to charge motorists a $15 fee for walking in the door

As if the time spent waiting to do business at the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles wasn't costly enough, the state agency wants Rhode Islanders to pay extra for the privilege.
A $15 "in-person" customer-service fee is one of the ideas the DMV is pitching to Gov. Gina Raimondo in its annual budget request. Another is a $15 "late fee" that would hit motorists renewing a license or registration that has expired. Both fees, included in the DMV's plan for the year starting next July 1, would come on top of what customers have to pay to complete either transaction.

The $15 fee would apply to standard license and registration renewals that can be completed online or by mail. This does not include a switch to a Real ID license, which has to be done in person. The fee would apply to walk-ins at AAA offices that process license and registration renewals as well as walk-ins at regular DMV branches.
Online transaction fees would remain.

Next year, the DMV hopes to achieve a one-hour average wait time (measured from when a customer pulls a ticket, often after having waited in a line, to when their transaction is finished.) That is the same one-hour average wait time the DMV aspires to this year and targeted in 2018-19.

Awesome. A cover charge to get into the DMV. That is some Louisiana-level bullshite.

Have no idea why dmv’s are crowded these days when most things can be done online or in a title agency

Louisiana takes it to another level by contracting private companies to do DMV work for them and allowing them to charge transaction fees on top of license fees.
They get all their money without having to do any of the work unless someone shows up at an “official” DMV like Independence Blvd.

Well worth it though. Needed a new license with change of address. Title place only charged $5 on top of DMV
In and out in like 10 min

They are still going to have to work to reach the level of incompetence of the LA DMV. Nice try though.
Had to pay a $470 "late fee" last year when I got a tag for a 1973 Corvette I bought a couple of years earlier and restored. Keep in mind that when I bought it, it was basically a pile of parts with a frame and motor. It was in no way, shape or form what one would call a vehicle. When I tried to register it they informed me the $470 was because I didn't register the car the day I bought it and waited until it was roadworthy. According to the dipshits at the counter, if you buy something with a VIN (like a motor I guess?) you have to register it immediately or pay a fee later.

I gladly pay the online fees now in the state of Alabama to avoid that shite.

I would encourage this. Have some cover charge lines and some free lines. I’ll take my express lane with a small cover charge to wait 15 mins over the normal waiting period of like 3+ hours

More like a 10 a-hole minimum between clerks and other patrons.

These are the same people that want to be in charge of your healthcare

Meanwhile, Texas has had a system in place for years that would let you “pull a ticket” from home and wait “in line” there. Even give you heads up estimates on when you should leave.

I really hate how overtaxed we are already by govt.

While I understand and agree with what they are trying to do (dissuade unnecessary in-person visits), this is a really dumb way to go about it.
How about offering a discount to people who renew their license and registration online?
No extra money to be made that way though, I suppose

Exactly. Instead of fixing the problem on the government's end, let's just outsource the work to a private company.
