Here's where it really gets bad - scenarios where there should be 3 distinct groups.

"Driving down Airline Hwy, I saw two tranny whores, your dad and brother."

This implies your dad and brother are tranny whores. Now if I meant to say I saw two tranny whores in addition to your dad and brother, it should be:

"Driving down airline hwy, I saw two tranny whores, your dad, and brother."

This is stupid. It's clear they meant it as a list with distribution as the last item. If "packing for shipment or distribution" was one thing and not two things, then they would have had to use "or" between "storing, packing" to be grammatically correct. I can't believe a lawsuit arguing over that comma actually won in court

Use of the word "and" supercedes use of the comma.

I use it. We were taught in school to do so, with limited exceptions for a few things like "the red, white and blue" that have become a term.

I was shocked to learn as an adult that many were taught the opposite and that there was this big debate.

Those who oppose it (mainly newspaper people who are tight with space) should at least use one when it leaves room for ambiguity. Don't make the reader have to stop and wonder what the hell you are trying to say.

This is a good thread. I like reading and posting here because the majority of the posters actually care about grammar and punctuation.

I was tought not to use the Oxford comma, but it always seemed awkward to leave it out.

I took advanced English classes at a public school high school in LP. My teacher was obviously wrong. I was corrected on this issue soon after starting at LSU.

A case allowing for more than one interpretation of contractual language won't often end well for the authoring party. That was a poorly written contract.

My syntax and punctuation generally blow, so my view means dick-all, but I can see both sides.

It removes ambiguities, namely in this-type situation. But (to me, anyway), it doesn't always flow as casually.

I really just wanted to post

I was always taught not to use it. Hence the confusion and the debate over what is correct.

Always use the Oxford comma. No one will ever convince me the alternative is better to communicate.

I would agree with this. It seems very reasonable that they would forget a comma before they forgot the conjunctive word.
