cardboard actually.

I haven't watched the video, are you equating cardboard and leatherboard (which I would understand as a pejorative) or are you saying they used something made of plant fibers?

He said the stacked heel used cardboard. Not what you'd expect in a thousand dollar boot.

Jesus, I'll have to watch the video at some point. Leather board is bad enough at the price but cardboard is insane.

I think it's in the second half of the video. Said cardboard several times.

Like I said earlier, Alden had a major embezzlement scandal three or four years ago. CFO looted the company for millions and lived really high on the hog. Wanted a Hamptons lifestyle. We are talking a $30 million embezzlement. That is huge for a company such as Alden. So..... it would not be a surprise to learn Alden cut some corners or was forced to do so.

I have a pair of Alden Indy's in Horween chromexcel wth that have stood the test of time. I think I bought them in 2012 (Alden x Brick & Mortar), haven't had to be resoled yet, but thinking not long before I do. I'm probably going to send them to that outfit in Tennessee that does what looks like some nice re-soles.

I've never had a problem with Aldens - have a number in my closet including several in Horween Cordovan color 8, some of which are easily 20 years old. Hate to hear it if they are cutting corners. I've always thought they were on par with the Cleverly's and John Lobbs I have, though the styling is a little more stodgy, but the execution is excellent.

Why I've never considered them personally. The Indy Boot is a good looking boot, but not something I would wear regularly. Everything else just looks meh to me. I had gotten addicted to Bedo's leatherworks channel for a while and he loves them, so I'd have to think they were at least at one time quality.

I actually requested a quote from Bedo's for repairing some AE 5th Ave's that had a small gash in the leather and wanted to upgrade to JR soles when they were still being made. Was more than the cost of the shoe by far .

That is high praise. I have a pair of bespoke Cleverley Oxfords my parents gave me when I graduated and they would be one of the first inanimate objects I would save in a fire. Partly sentimental but also because they are the most comfortable dress shoe I have ever owned.

What pair of Indys is $1000?

I have a pair of calf skin Indys that I paid $450 for in 2016 and have never had any work done to them. They were originally built as therpeutic boots and I had arch problems. They did a lot of good and were far cheaper than any corrective activities and co-pay.

They need, in 2023, heels and perhaps a re-stitch on the main sole.

They are also the most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them to jobsites and trade shows and they were worth every penny quite a few times over.

Not sure what Rose Anvil's problem is but mine have been rock solid for seven years with just the occasional polish.

Arians and the like work fine for working in a factory, doing casual tasks and the like.

But they are not a serious outdoor work boot. When you're on fire duty like my dad volunteered for for 20 years, you're on your feet 16 hours a day in rough terrain digging fire breaks.

For me, I'm on my farm busting my arse for a few hours for 365 days a year in every weather condition. Cutting down trees, repairing fence, welding pipe fence, etc. My $600 Superdutys handle it comfortably and are great. Something like Ariats would last a handful of months.

From just a cursory search, pretty much all of their Cordovan boots start at $919, and that's on their shop site. Prices are higher from other sellers.

Yeah but the cordovans are the top of the line and perhaps 5% of sales. The Indy is a $500 boot all day and the occasional guy comes along for the $1000 cordovan.

That's what the topic of the thread is, though. That's what Rose Anvil was wearing and tore down, the $1,000 pair.

He has started shitting on anything that isn't 4mm thick with live cows for insoles.

Dude collabed with JK and made some truly unwearable boots that looked cool. Then defended the boots when people started calling out that they were unrealistic.

Finally he sort of relented and has admitted the boots were too much, but that you need to buy his new collab that is equal absurd. But they look cool.

Some of his critiques are spot on and some manufacturers should be called out. Just have to wade through the BS.

His mocking of DR Marten while making a 'look at me' product is so on brand for him.

Why would anyone spend that much on boots?

For real working boots like Nick's, worth the investment. For desk jockeys a pair of sneakers or dress shoes from JC Penny's is enough.
