I personally know 3 people who left their company for a remote job and more pay doing the same thing because their current employer would not allow. 2 of these people are working for companies out of state but working from their home
Well the reality is if the "pay is more" elsewhere they would have left anyway....

Damn, directors can't dictate their own working conditions at your place? What's the justification for forfeiting all the time and money invested in this person? Didn't want her opinion to snowball?
That's wild to not make it work with such a high level employee. Maybe the director role isn't as high up as it is in my company.
We're having higher than usual turnover, but not because of our move back to office work. In fact I know we've lost a few people because they wanted to travel but we weren't allowing it soon enough.
Directors here report to SVPs. I am director of one discipline, she is another, etc.
I was able to get a concession on my return to work, but it was minor. She was requesting a plan that barely required any office time. Ultimately, she chose her family and young children over pointless commuting and wasted time.
The tech is so seamless now, it's actually MORE productive to let people work wherever they want. Work in the same docs from any device. Transition calls from device to device.

Any company which has jobs that can be completed remotely that does not offer remote options is going to suffer and get the bottom of the barrel employees unless they are willing to pay significantly above fair market value. One good thing which came out of Covid is it taught us we can be just as productive at home as we were at the office, given the right tools. And we can work for anyone, anywhere.

Could you draw a trans Mickey? If so, Disney is looking for people.

Not if they had to move and the cost of living was higher. Think about being paid at Chicago cost of living but living in Mississippi.

my old job had us in the office more in 2020 than i spent in the previous 4 years because we were not at customers as often. Even as a fully commissioned sales rep, they would force us in the office.
I don't care, i can't sit at a desk all day so working from home full time wouldn't work for me.
it did suck coming in office every day playing roulette on when i was going to get covid

Not necessarily. Remote working opens up options that may not have been on the table previously. I work for a firm based out of Tennessee, I may or may not have moved to Tennessee for this job when it was initially offered to me, but now with my wife established in her career too (she was just finishing school when I got this job), it would be much harder for us to pick up and move to another state for my job.
If another firm came to me offering even a 20% raise, but I would have to move my family, it would basically be a no-go for me.
At this point in my career, I value flexibility more than money, unless it would be some sort of life changing amount.

This same issue is trickling all the way down to entry level jobs. A single parent without a college degree that may have been forced to work retail or in the service industry can now get entry level customer service jobs working from home, make the same amount of money, not have to worry about transportation, avoid childcare issues, etc.
My nephew cut grass last year on college summer break. This year, he's working customer service in the AC for a fortune 500 company from the comfort of his college apt.

My group is staying remote for the foreseeable future. I am interviewing at other places and using this fact as part of my justification for requesting 30-40% premium.

I’m good with it. Some people still prefer to come in daily. Others threatened to quit having to come back. The hotelling model seems to work nicely, while still coming in for team meetings.

My previous job was like that. I was on the road constantly visiting our 50+ locations, and my boss traveled even more. He didn't give a shiat if I came into office on a Friday if I had traveled all week.
Covid came. Regime change happened. New guy wanted us in the office every day. We were literally the only group in the tower. There were never more than 10-20 cars in the deck. It was unbearable for those reasons and more.

Jobs that are easy to apply metrics to seem like a no-brainer for this. Customer Service? How many calls did you take? Check. How are your reviews? Check.
I would much prefer to deal with a rep where I can hear giggling kids in the background than struggling to understand dialect or hear a dozen other operators in the background.

Thing is, they have been more productive since working from home. Not just a little bit...significantly more productive.
Because there is no office politics, no group bitching about work, less idiotic meetings and bosses looking over your shoulder. People also can work when they feel more productive. Like 6am or 7pm that may not have been an option before.

similar but no regime change, our GM always thought our product sold itself and had no respect for the sales staff. Tacked on tons of worthless tasks and spreadsheets to fill time despite us still being pretty busy all things consider.
As soon as Abbott lifted some restriction, he had everyone else back in the office. Which was so stupid cause we would just have outbreaks in the various teams and rooms.
When i got covid, i got grilled on where i got it and how selfish it was that i went out to get drinks. Which they just assumed i got there but more likely i had gotten at any number of customers, or in the office.

This is the problem .. some employees are lazy and undisciplined.. becuase they project their attitudes onto everyone else, they can’t conceive of someone being MORE productive while working remotely .. as a result, you have these assine execs demanding ‘butts in seats’ and losing good people as a result .

I work in commercial construction/maintenance. Pretty much every existing office building I visit is empty as shite. Pretty crazy.

They should give people a pay cut if they work remote.

isnt this the third or fourth thread you've started on this? Look dude, either find a new job or accept your role as a worker bee and embrace it. You aren't gonna convince your employer by bitching about it here. Its their company and they set the policies. If they wanted your input or to cater to your desires, they would. They don't. And they aren't. So its either time to find a new job or suck it up and get back to work. Brutal truth.
Or start your own business and run it as you want. I"d bet a lot of your opinions would change if you were an owner. Even if it was just for a month.
