If you process...I'll be conservative and say 30 customers at a kiosk an hour...and I'll waaaaaay lowball this at 1$ a customer average in missed scans.
I mean...you don't see how it might not be a savings?

I have forgotten to scan an item at Cosco at the self-checkout and they take it very seriously if you do that. it's almost like a strike on your record.

none of the cashiers showed up to work.
The alternative is not opening the store at all and leaving you empty handed or over paying at another store… if any of them are open!

WalMart has receipt checkers though.
The one at Cortana has a huge black guy hanging around the self-checkout area. I forget what his vest said but something along the lines of loss prevention.

I am glad to see that retailers are getting away from surrendering to crime. When they ignore crime, it hurts society.
I'm seeing some reversals on generous return policies. I have seen retailers accept returns for clearly well used clothing. So, the person doing the return knows that she can keep buying clothes, wearing them, and then return them. I saw a return the other day of luggage that was clearly used.
It would be better for everyone if the retailers would say "if it is used, you aren't returning it unless it has a defect."

I used to be all for self-checkout but I'm changing my mind now that its the norm. It's even more of a shitshow than having cashiers and they're pushing the labor on the customer.
They should find the happy medium like 10 items or less you can self checkout, but everything else is cashiers.

Home Depot in Denham completely shut down their self checkout back in November. Roped off and registers closed. They have also completely shut the contractor exit down.

I'd rather let someone else check me out with more than 20-30 items but my wife doesn't like strangers touching the merch

The Amazon store models will gain more traction. You will need to have your mobile account linked to enter and when you leave automatically charges you. This will filter out the trash of society and places like Wal Mart will find a happy medium in this somehow.

Home Depot in Lake Charles is trying to get away from self-checkout. The manager wants it gone due to theft but corporate is fighting him.
The HD on highland in BR won’t let anyone use self checkout anymore due to theft. It was a shite show last time I was there because they don’t have the right amount of cashiers to run each kiosk

I have several friends that manage for Wal Mart. Short handed and high rates of call ins are still a problem for them. They would love to have cashiers but self check out is the only real solution for them

Self-checkouts can only really work in high-trust societies.
Lee Kuan Yew (former prime minister of Singapore) visited London in the 1950s prior to his political career, and was mesmerized by the unattended newspaper booths on the street. He wanted to recreate that society in Singapore (he did).
It is sad what has become of the West now. LKY proved that hope is not lost, things can turn around, but it requires a strong hand.

Puhlease.
Still insanely cheaper to eat the stolen costs than pay for cashiers.

And they don't have workman's comp or HR claims

It’s racist to not have self checkout. I’m not trying to stand in lines at the register.

In some cases, this means simply not scanning an item, but it also includes keying in the code for a cheaper item instead of the proper one.

Let's just say the receipt checkers only really care that they see you paid for beer when beer is in your cart. They are not going to look around to make sure loose produce is paid for.

My mom who worked at Walmart for years was telling me about the new tech they were in the process of rolling out at self checkouts. Apparently it uses facial recognition software in conjunction with other identifying information like your debit card transaction to build a profile. Items you fail to pay for are tracked and stored along with legit purchases. Once your theft reaches a certain dollar amount, that’s when they move forward with pressing charges using all of the information against you.
