Ehhhh, you could just make a large batch of ranch and serve it in ramekins instead of the individual sized ones. The costs would be minimal and you could probably up your food costs by 50 cents and cover it without much fuss. I'd say it's less noticeable to pay $9.50 for a meal, then to pay $9 and then see an additional $0.50 on the ticket to cover your dipping sauce. It's one of the reasons I don't get soft drinks at restaurants anymore. I can swing the $2, but I know that drink costs the place a nickel and seeing that $2 brings out a jew-rage in me

I worked at two restaurants. One gave it away, the other charged for everything. I don't remember having to serve tons more at the restaurant that gave it away for free. And I wouldn't say the place selling it made a killing off of it.

You nailed it: everyone knows that a bottle of dressing / sauce doesn't cost $40 which is what it would be if each small amount cup were valued at the restaurant price.

I agree. But I prefer water anyway.

Actually, you have this wrong. It should say:

Cane's wouldn't be as large as it is now if they weren't so insistent upon charging $.29 for a thing of sauce in order to reduce loss and maintain margins, which allows for reinvestment and growth.

It has nothing to do with reducing loss and maintaining margins at Cane's. You can get all the free ketchup and honey mustard sauce you want there.

It has to do with Cane's sauce being the draw to the restaurant in the first place. People like Cane's sauce and go there because of it. Thus, they put a premium on it, it's an exclusivity thing.

You make a higher minimum. Maybe 2 sauces instead of 1? After that charge?

Idk.

I've always been told restaurants make more money on booze than food which always makes me ask "why not just open a bar with good snacks?"

ETA:

I'm a one sauce and a cup of water guy. But I'm not a fatty.

This thread is still going on?

The restaurant I managed began to charge for extra dressings because people would routinely ask for three or four ramekins of dressing and then only use 1 1/4. Then you have the people that order extra dressings for their to-go orders so that they can keep the extras in their fridge ("Yeah, I need four house salads with eight dressings, one ranch, one french, on italian, and five bleu cheese.")

When you routinely see untouched "free" food going in the trash, you end up doing something about it.

Is it really worth annoying or pissing a customer off over a 25¢ cup of ranch dressing?

What do you do for a living? Does your company survive by making a profit on it's customers? Restaurants are hard to recoup food costs without charges. I can see free refills because drinks are cheap, but sauces add up and if they are free, people will abuse it.
Plus they like everyone else will do what can be done to maximize profit.

Well it's certainly not free. And I don't want them putting it into the price of meals. Making me pay for your fricking ranch.

I know Little Caesar's charges like 50 cents for a thing of marinara sauce. I get one if we order cheesy bread. But, they have started in recent months to only fill them halfway. Bastards!!

has to be done or people will take advantage.
Or you could come up w/ a better option instead of greed. Like 4 nuggets per sauce pack (just example) and if you order 12 nuggets, you get 3 sauce packs and anything more is .25$.

Stop going to those type of restaurants if this bothers you. Places like popeyes and buffalo wild wings don't make good margins on their low food prices. They make money by pricing their food as cheaply as possible and selling a lot of it. You may not think so, but giving out extra sauce for free would affect their ability to make a profit.

That one blue cheese or ranch is pitiful. I eat there quite a bit and that has extra charge had always been an aggravation of mine.

If the amount provided is reasonable and the cost for extra is essentially at restaurant cost - that's fine.

If they are trying to turn basic meal elements into profit centers - it's obnoxious.

If you are going to doing EVERYTHING at a fee, you have to make sure you aren't charging full normal price for the fries and then 50 cent for each 10 cent packet of ketchup (as an overstated example). If its no drink refills, price the first a little lower than the bottomless rates that are normal.
