Buddy, every restraurant charged you a fee for a CC, the place you went to just decided to be upfront about it.

Used to they'd get a warning from their processing company mandated by the card brand (VS, MC, DS or AX). If they continued the practice, they would get blacklisted from accepting credit cards ever again. Anymore I believe the card brands have gotten looser with surcharging to the client. There is a cap to what is allowed now if I understand correctly. Some businesses sorta got around the rule with a "cash discount" which is essentially the same thing but legal in the processing agreement. AmEx has gained acceptance in a lot of places because they've started falling more in line with Visa and MC's pricing but they're still more expensive. Just not exponentially more expensive.

I used to be a pricing analyst at a credit card company. Interchange expense at a restaurant for a rewards card is all in around 2.04% plus $.20. It gets surcharged past that by some amount to the actual business. So maybe 2.5% or so is a common rate to pay for a rewards card. It is a real expense to the business but like said previously, it should be built into the meal prices. Not line item'd out.

I'm friends with a GM at a local chain restaurant and he said his run-rate is around 1.75% give or take .25% each month. I imagine that is common.

The credit card charges the restaurant and apparently they are passing it on.

Stop at a little boudin place in patterson along US90 a few weeks ago and the lady gave me a 3% discount because I paid with cash. So they have it already figured into their price.

You sure about that? Because I dont remember the bill changing after I give my credit card. You saying they charge you for the CC fee even if you pay cash?

I'm not your buddy, pal. And they were not upfront about it. Nothing was mentioned until I questioned the bill at the end of the meal. That's not being upfront.

I went to a place recently with a $5 minimum for CC purchases. I got what I wanted and it was $3.40. Then I realized the sign. I grabbed a canned drink that was $1.25 and it came up just a few cents short of $5.

I told the girl just to charge my card $5 and she acted like I grew a nose out of my ear.

How the hell is that legal?

How the hell should it be illegal?

It is only illegal if there is a state law against it--meaning there is no federal law against it (BTW, as far as I know, the only federal law on the subject is that a merchant must accept legal tender, which is money printed or coined by the US mint).

It was for many years a violation of the merchant's agreement with VISA or Mastercard to charge a fee. Then this happened:

quote:

A 2013 class action lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard resulted in a settlement that allows businesses to charge their customers a fee for using credit cards — commonly referred to as “merchant surcharges” or “checkout fees.”

The settlement will allow businesses to reduce the impact of credit card processing fees. However, there are many rules businesses must follow in order to charge checkout fees, as well as pros and cons that should be considered before deciding if surcharging your customers when they use credit cards is the right move for your business.

Credit Card Surcharges: Charging Fees for Using Cards

Per linked blog, merchants in

cannot charge a fee for paying with a credit card.

They'd get better responses if they instead offered a cash discount. Incentivize people to use a different payment method rather than discourage them from using another.

Spec's does this. It's 5%.

Worst part is they heavily advertise a $7.99 lunch special, and put the credit card fee notice in very small print on the bottom. Had I seen it before he left I would have told him what I thought about it.

It's the servers fault about as much the CC charging a fee is mine.

I don't give a frick. Charge me 3% and the tip comes down. I'm not paying it.

So they just charge it to everyone regardless of payment. This isn't that hard to understand, but you have people like the OP bitching so the restaurants just bake it in for everyone.

The waiter can easily avoid this by saying they charge a fee when they seat you. "We charge a fee for cc but we have a ATM right over there if you would like to use cash." How difficult is that?

I was just charged a fee for using my credit card at a restaurant. Anyone heard of this before? This wasn't some gas station with a $2.00 minimum, this was for a sit-down meal with a client. What kind of tomfoolery is this?

Guy by our house has decent popular restaurant. Does't accept credit cards, but has an ATM onsite, and also accepts checks.

Same guy opens a second restaurant. Accepts credit cards. However, charges a 2.75% fee to do so. It's listed seperately on bill. That information is in very small print on the bottom of one side of the menu.

Just seems very petty to me.

I run a concession stand for a youth facility, and we accept credit cards, and don't charge a fee. And that restaurant is making much more money than we are.

And once you got the bill, you could've left and got cash and came back.

Stop being poor. Did this incident happen at the Applebee's next to your plant?
