Restaurants charging a credit card fee. Is this new?

I was just charged a fee for using my credit card at a restaurant. Anyone heard of this before? This wasn't some gas station with a $2.00 minimum, this was for a sit-down meal with a client. What kind of tomfoolery is this?

Sounds like something your credit card company would shite on the restaurant for.

How much was the charge?

Id reduce tip by that amount
I dont know why businesses do this, it pisses people off
Just raise the price of everything by 3% to make up for it

It's not new.
Let the free market do its thing.

I mean, every business pretty much put something in their margins to account for the fees the credit card companies charge. But it’s unusual to see a place line item out that.

they could be paying 1-3% more if a rewards card as the merchant pays that. its an overall cost on the product, but if you pay cash, you dont get charged for it.

Was it an Indian restaurant?
They pull that kind of shite all the time.

Restaurant just opened up down the street from the office that does this. Manager came by the office dropping off menus and some coupons and I noticed it on there and promptly threw them all away. Terrible business practice, IMO.
Worst part is they heavily advertise a $7.99 lunch special, and put the credit card fee notice in very small print on the bottom. Had I seen it before he left I would have told him what I thought about it.

Call your card company and inform them the restaurant did this. They'll probably issue you a credit refund and cut off the restaurant that did it from their services (stern warning at the least).

Noticed this at two places recently. It wasn’t advertised or made clear beforehand.
Sucks for the servers because their tip is what becomes compromised.

I’ve been exactly one place that does this as far as I know. Never went back after I found out what that percentage fee was.

What kind of card is it? Amex and Discover tend to charge more. That's why they are less accepted than Visa and MC. If a place is charging a fee for those two cards, I can see it.
Amex's services % charged to businesses used to be DOUBLE that of Visa thus we didn't take it at Mr. Gattis. And Papa Johns didn't take Discover for years.

Businesses have eaten it in the past but many have began passing it on, as they should. It’s from your credit card company though.

Take it out the tip and let the waiter know why.

I've seen it at restaurants before. We went to the beach last week and on the way home stopped to get gas in Montgomery and the gas station had separate prices for gas for cash and credit card users. The cash price was 15 cents or so cheaper than using a card.
How the hell is that legal?

They'd get better responses if they instead offered a cash discount. Incentivize people to use a different payment method rather than discourage them from using another.

Looks like I will start paying in cash more again. I go through cycles where it's all I'll use

What would be illegal about it? Private businesses can set their own pricing policies, don’t be a commie
