the waiter was shitty, then sure-tip accordingly.

But if you received quality service, why are you punishing the person who has 0 say in the policy?
You trying to reason with OT geniuses is the same as not tipping the waiter because of a credit card fee.

$100 bill, restaurant gets $97.00, CC company gets $3.00
$103 bill, restaurant gets $99.91, CC company gets $3.09

Restaurant wins.

Someone has to relay the message to management and ownership. If the dude gets stiffed enough then he will say something. I know I do when my company costs me money with a decision I didn't make.

Exactly! Most card issuers specifically forbid this.

I dont get your point. If they raise prices by 3% the CC company only gets 3% or whatever of that 3% and the business pockets the rest to cover the cost of the CC fee

Because CC fees come straight from your profit margin, there is no way to make it up.

You can't simply say, "raise your prices". Use the gas station as an example, you have one across the street from you and both of you are advertising your prices. If one is 3% more guess who gets more business.

Now we can certainly say capitalism and I agree with you. But one Po-boy place can't simply raise their prices above all the others.

The best option, is as said, to offer a cash discount.

That must be it. Hair gel sales are down this month and I was depending on this lunch to come through with a bulk order!

Sure they can. They aren't on competing corners with giant price signs like gas stations.

If the poboy is better and/or closer to my house, I'll pay $1 more for it

Merchant processors are selling businesses this practice as a way of eliminating the cost of the processing fee and passing it on to the customer. Ive been approached by several in the past year to do this but feel its a bad business practice.

Half the posts in that best po-boy thread were people bitching about size and price. So I guess yes.

I think its funny that someone comes in here and complains about a flat line credit card fee.

But then is okay with a flat increase in price with a cash discount. If you are paying with a card, its the same thing...

Does it really matter if they charge you a fee, or they put it into the price?

Same end result. It costs money. At least they give you an option for cheaper totals if you bring cash instead. If they put it into the price, it’s going to be marked up, so it’s going to be that much more.

I’ve only seen this practice at small places that are usually run by foreigners

Dot Indians are notorious for passing on the CC processing fee to patrons.

I've been seeing more gas stations with separate pricing on their signs. $2.29 cash / $2.39 credit. Will never stop at those gas stations unless its the only one around for miles and I'm running on fumes.

Used to fill up a lot a Chevron by the old Toys R Us in Marrero until they changed to this practice. Didn't notice it until I was halfway done pumping and saw the price on the pump was higher than the price on the sign by the street. Then I noticed the smaller sign at the bottom with a credit price. Never got gas from them again after that.

What pisses me off more is when they charge for a to-go box. Fausto's restaurant charges based on the size of the to-go box (big ones are $2 IIRC). They even charge you if you dine in.

Vincent's in Metairie auto-grats 20% for to-go orders. Never had that happen uptown.

I refuse to go in either place, because they nickel and dime people on $75+ orders for two people

The average consumer is dumb. This board is no exception. If you hide the cost, no one cares. If you're transparent about it, everyone freaks.
