Restaurant etiquette - sitting at a big table alone

Why do people do this?
I’m in a local M&3 that only has 2 tables to accommodate a party of 5 or more. Some jack dick by himself had taken one of them, despite the fact that there are at least 5 open tables for smaller groups...and a couple of 2-toppers.
Should I check his knuckles?
