Resentment of first-class passengers can be a cause of air rage

But one of the most common sources of air rage has nothing to do with negative experiences on board a plane. Quite the opposite. According to a new study, passengers are far more prone to misbehaviour if they see that other passengers are having a better experience.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the study finds that passengers in economy class are 3.8 times more likely to become unruly if the plane also contains a first-class section. If those passengers have to walk through first class to get to their seats, their odds of experiencing air rage double again. “We suggest that physical and situational inequality are built into people’s everyday environments—such as the modern plane—and that exposure to these forms of inequality can trigger anti-social behaviour,” write the paper’s authors, Katherine DeCelles of the University of Toronto and Michael Norton of Harvard.

I feel angry until I remember they paid 5 times as much for those seats.
ETA: most first class domestic looks only slightly better than coach and yet still cost way more

Well some people don't like it when others can afford something that they cannot.
was a study really necessary?

Airline travel is one of the least pleasant experiences in our society, and it is only getting worse.
Cramming more and more seats into these planes.
Scruffy hates flying.

I've always said they should make the poors board from the back so I don't have to see them. Seems like it would be a win win.

The study should have said that certain persons are pushing the notion of inequality on portions of the population for political gain. Leading them to believe that others earning the ability to better themselves is "unfair."

First-class seats are for the uber-wealthy. They've been hated by common folk since the beginning of recorded history. I'm not really sure if it is anti-social behavior when it has been happening for thousands of years, but regardless, I'm not sure if this should come as a shock to anyone.
ETA: Nothing but down votes for pointing out class warfare has been going on forever.

At least half of first class is usually there because of upgrades due to status. Not a lot of people paying that premium when the riches can just charter.

I recently flew first from NOLA to DC and it was the same amount of American Airlines points had I flown economy.

For several years, I was a very heavy traveler and racked up a lot of miles and vouchers.
Occasionally, I would treat myself to 1st Class...until I realized that it was filled with some of the most boorish people in society.

the cost differential is crazy, I'm coach all the way. flying sucks, might as well do it as cheap as possible.

On many larger planes the business/first class passengers do have a separate entrance.
Personally it depends on the flight time if I will upgrade. If traveling domestically usually will travel coach unless the flight time is greater than four hours. Then I will balance price versus comfort.
