IN THE next few weeks, scientists in the US will begin a remarkable medical experiment. They are seeking 100,000 applicants from all walks of life – young, old, rich, poor, urban, rural, fat, thin, black, white, brown. They will winnow them down to 10,000 and then spend years studying every aspect of their health, including why some of them age better and whether drugs might extend their lives.

quote:

During the trial, the subjects will be taken out for walks and have their faeces collected in bags. They will have their tummies tickled, fetch sticks, chase balls, sniff one another’s butts and urinate against lampposts. Not because those are part of the experiment, but because the subjects are pet dogs.

The Dog Aging Project, based at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been years in the making but is finally off the leash. First and foremost, it will tell us a lot about the ageing process in dogs, says project leader Daniel Promislow. But the real goal is to understand more about how we ourselves age, and how we might slow it down or even reverse it. It seems our best shot at defeating human ageing will come from studying not ourselves, but 10,000 of our best friends.

quote:

The idea of using animals as proxies to study our own ills is nothing new. The edifice of modern human medicine is largely built on animal experiments, particularly mice altered to get human diseases, which can be used to test treatments.

“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in.
You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

Then why do we give dogs booster shots and heartworm medication and feed them specially designed dog food?

I guess I just think of our pets as family members . Not just animals to be left on a chain in the front yard to sleep under the car on blocks .

Because it’s a living thing that we are attached to

I’m not sure what point you are trying to make with this

Do you think pets should not be given vaccines & fed decent food?

No I'm saying we take our dogs to vets, give them shots, and feed them only certain foods because we want them to live longer...

We do all of that to squeeze out a few extra years, so why not explore whether we can double or triple the lifespan?

Why is our research stopping at this random point in time of only a few years extra?

Bigger breeds usually have shorter life expectancy right? I know dogs like a Mastiff has like an 8-10 yr life span. But medium size dogs seem to have longer life expectancies. It seems like small dogs have a long life expectancy but usually has lots of health problems.

Pitbulls live forever.

Longer living dogs means more stray dogs.
Also, if your dog can live to 20 you’re more likely to pay for that 10k surgery. Bout to invest in pet insurance.

Does it? I don't think that's a given. There are multiple factors that would be in play. For starters you may have to neuter the dog before you administer the longevity treatment which means the dogs are not using their extra time to create more dogs.

Good call. Most people still don't get insurance for their pets.

There will be a whole new market for doggy caskets and funeral services.
