The researchers stuck a 2-inch strip of tape on a 35-mph speed sign, and the car's system misread it as 85 mph and adjusted its speed accordingly.

The safety of Tesla's autopilot features has come under close scrutiny, but CEO Elon Musk has predicted the company will have "feature-complete full self-driving" this year.

I see these types of things as good things.

The makers will learn from this, and continue to develop. It is good to find these bugs.

The world is going to autonomous driving. It is just a matter of time. Better to learn this stuff now.

Awfully nice of all these researchers to provide free R&D finding bugs and whatnot.

That said this seems like one of those things that you'd cross-check vs. a database of speed limits by location, plus I don't know place a hard limit on the max speed as well.

Isn't tampering with road signs a felony?

Yeah, I mean Waze is pretty damn accurate for speed limits by itself

What do these autonomous vehicles do about a cop directing traffic?

I just RTFA and a couple others, and it turns out the system does cross check what it reads from signs vs what it knows from GPS data.

So it looks like this vulnerability only works under these specific circumstances:

1. Older model Tesla with specific camera that can be fooled in this way
2. "Off the beaten path" location with no known speed limit.
3. Speed Assist engaged
4. Some jackass committing crimes tampering with speed limit signs

We call that "security research" in my line of work.

That's certainly an issue. Probably a good thing to be out there now, and it can be reviewed and resolved.

When other automakers finally get to adding a similar style auto pilot and autonomous driving features, because they all will, they will be able to have this on their radar earlier as well.

As a proud Roanoke College alumni, Mr. Mcafee spoke at my wife’s graduation. His speech was pretty good and he basically said f the rules and do it your own way.

This was 10+ years ago and it is nice to see he has lived up to his own words.

Saw an article recently about a study that showed Teslas hold their value better than any other car out there.

It made me think of your melt previously when i said that and you said it would be a "travesty" if someone bought a Tesla based on the advice I gave on TD about how well Teslas held their value.

There are no true autonomous vehicles, so the answer is the driver would manually intervene.
