Best Answer: PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the question. the question concerns LEGALLY OWNED automatic weapons.
"In 1995 there were over 240,000 machine guns registered with the BATF. (Zawitz, Marianne,Bureau of Justice Statistics, Guns Used in Crime [PDF].)
https://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/gui...
About half are owned by civilians and the other half by police departments and other governmental agencies (Gary Kleck, Targeting Guns: Firearms and Their Control, Walter de Gruyter, Inc., New York, 1997.)

Since 1934, there appear to have been at least two homicides committed with legally owned automatic weapons. One was a murder committed by a law enforcement officer (as opposed to a civilian). On September 15th, 1988, a 13-year veteran of the Dayton, Ohio police department, Patrolman Roger Waller, then 32, used his fully automatic MAC-11 .380 caliber submachine gun to kill a police informant, 52-year-old Lawrence Hileman. Patrolman Waller pleaded guilty in 1990, and he and an accomplice were sentenced to 18 years in prison. The 1986 'ban' on sales of new machine guns does not apply to purchases by law enforcement or government agencies.
---
Thanks to the staff of the Columbus, Ohio Public Library for the details of the Waller case.

Source: talk.politics.guns FAQ, part 2.

The other homicide, possibly involving a legally owned machine gun, occurred on September 14, 1992, also in Ohio (source).

https://members.cox.net/arporro/photos/Sh...

In Targeting Guns, Kleck cites the director of BATF testifying before Congress that he knew of less than ten crimes that were committed with legally owned machine guns (no time period was specified). Kleck says these crimes could have been nothing more than violations of gun regulations such as failure to notify BATF after moving a registered gun between states. "

All this info is good up until 1995, after which there is no record.

If that pic is legit that is not a rifle round. For sure a pistol round. I agree with the .45 assessment.

You never said used in murders, you said used in crimes. Big difference. Keep down voting me all you want.

Convenient that these covert guys that utilize windowless rooms leave their phone on accident. Dumbass people are dumbasses

Would be interesting if the dude did turn out to be a jihadist just to see the reaction. But it wouldn't change the outcome. The people are still dead. Lives are irreparably destroyed.

Either way, I guess the only solution from the right is to arm everyone.

Not that I care for the left's feel good solutions.

The only solution that would make me feel any safer would be to turn all public places into airport like security zones. Work, schools, stadiums. We'll all pay for it as all that additional security will cost more. And then mass shooters will just start shooting up people on the street. So we'll need to put cameras and body scanners everywhere.

In other words, I haven't a damn clue how to fix this.

If some nut wants to kill people, they'll find a way.

This hit close to home. My wife just went back to school a few weeks ago at a local community college here in Oregon. We live 2 1/2 hours from Roseburg. My wife said last week they briefed students at her school on what to do if there's an active shooter. And just what can you do? Arm yourself? Pray? Hope there's a National Guardsman in your class?

CNN reports that 3 pistols and 1 rifle were found, but no confirmation if all of these were the gunman's.

I had to go to class around page 10. Can someone give me an update what we've found out since then so I don't have to wade through the crap about gun control to find the good posts?

Your chances of becoming a victim to one of these situations is incredibly small. I don't want to live in a securitized zone. Being born an American in many ways is winning the lottery (or being blessed depending on your perspective). shite happens, it may eventually happen to any of us.

But I'm not going to squander it by worrying. I'm not saying we can't do anything, it's possible there are practical efforts we can make. But we live in a fairly nice, fairly free country and some people are going to abuse our relative easy going nature and our relatively loose security in everyday life.
