Did you build all sides originally? If not, it’s trashy to just tear it down without asking them.

Is it your fence on your property?
It would be kind or thoughtful to at least consult them. Then ask if they would like to help out. If it's their fence, it's a different arrangement entirely, and you'd also need permission.

In my neighborhood, the right-side fence is mine, and the left side fence belongs to the neighbor.

Ours blew over so my neighbor and I split the materials and build it ourselves.

If building it yourself, let them know what you are planning and see if they’ll help out

Not sure if it makes a difference, but none of the fence around my place is “mine”. Talked with one neighbor just randomly a while back and he asked if I knew anyone that could take care of it and he wanted to let me know that it would be done soon b/c of my a-hole GSP. We talked about what needed to be placed temporarily, so his yard doesn’t become a-hole’s yard to do what he pleases.

I went ahead and offered to help him pay for it. He is a good dude, so why not. The other 2 sections need it to, but I’m waiting to talk with the other folks. I figure once everyone starts then people will follow.

My neighbor was building a new fence. He asked me to split our adjoining section.

I didn't like how his was designed. So I paid fully for a better fence on our shared section. I didn't mind paying all of it to get the fence I wanted.

There are some specific laws in LA as related to common fences and walls.

Part of the Civil Code due to the ubiquitous shared walls of residences in the French Quarter. You should consult someone who knows about that shite before you build something that some neighbor objects to and then it has to be removed.

When my neighbor replaced her fence, we agreed that she would find out how much of the total amount was for that portion of the fence which was on our property line. That part, I paid half.

Unless you are close enough to consult with them about your plan and see if they have an opinion about it. If they have an opinion or want it done a certain way, then you can ask about chipping in, but to insinuate they *should* pay for half of it right out the gate is trashy.

You want to replace your fence and want your neighbors to chip in?

It’s not trashy to ask them, but if you were my neighbor and you asked me some dumb shite like that, 101% chance I’d laugh in your face

When I move into my house back in 92, there was a very old wooden fence 6 ft. tall that was in horrible shape. I removed all of it and reset any posts that were bad and paid for it myself. That way I got the fence I wanted and put the "finished" side to my property.

None of my neighbors objected since I footed the cost.

Let them know you’ll be replacing the fence. If they want to chip in they’ll offer, if they don’t you (should have) already planned to pay for the full fence.

I wouldn’t ask them to specifically chip in just because you want to replace it.

Isn’t Mexico supposed to pay for this type of thing?

It probably is if it is a straight replacement. However, if there is the potential to do something fairly nice - like an upgrade, make it face both sides, etc., then I don't think it is trashy to seek their input and ask if they want to help make it a better fence for all parties involved.

I don't think they're obligated, though, and ultimately it is your fence. But, being neighborly works both direction, IMHO.

My neighbor approached me about splitting the cost of replacing the fence bordering our properties. Since neither of us knew who originally put it up, I had no problem with splitting the cost as long as it was installed with quality materials and by a professional installer. No regrets here.
