If anyone cares why dryers now have 4 prong plugs, and the old one had 3 it was due to a change in the electrical code. Before the change if a appliance required both 240v and 120v internally the 120v was obtained by simply connecting from one leg of the 240v to Ground. After the change to the code if both 240v and 120v were required by a appliance it was required to have the neutral conductor run to the appliance to furnish the return side of the return side of the 120v instead of simply using the ground..

Only thing I have ever referred to as a pigtail is a “pigtail socket”. Two wires to a rubber light bulb socket. We used to have to make our own strong of lightbulbs.

Dryer cord is called a dryer cord.

Whip is edgy I guess. Kinda of like saying drywall instead of Sheetrock.

Not just the ground wire. Using a short piece of white or black wire from the wire nut to the device has also been called a pigtail. Also as just mentioned, pigtail lights. Lots of terms for things.

Screws or bolts.
End mills or bits.
Mitre saw or chop saw.
Faucet, silcock or hose bib

Three wires indicate a 50 amp supply at 240 volt

Four wires indicate a 50 amp supply at 120 volt

but home wiring experts have hashed up many circuit to be in various configuration. If you get past the initial flash with no damage and it does not shock you may be okey. I tried to hook up a lamp to a 120 volt circuit and blew the fixture because a previous home electrician had converted a 120 to 240 circuit.

Stop doing electrical work immediately. You are endangering yourself and worse than that, you don't realize it.
