Replacing a Key FOB

Never needed to do this before. Is the dealership the only place in BR to get a replacement? Do I need the vehicle the FOB goes with to be there? (Currently broken FOB is a key+FOB all in one and is in pieces)

Get ready to pay out the arse for something that should cost a few dollars

You may want to hit youtube first. I replaced one on a Lexus by buying a blank and switching out the metal portion of the key (so I did not have to get it cut) and programming it using a YT guide. Cost me less than $25 and maybe 20 minutes. If the important bits had all been OK I could have bought just the plastic shell for under $10.

Amazon then watch a youtube video on how to program it.

I saw that. Also saw where someone in the comments said they broke the chip trying to remove it from the old FOB. I plan on buying a blank and trying this as well.
Looks like Batteries Plus on Siegen has replacements. I just don't want to cobble together the only key for the car and drive it unless absolutely necessary.

Pop-a-Lock can do this for around 50 bucks, and they will make your new key the master, plus delete any other keys in your vehicles computer that you may not have possession of. I did this a few years back when the Ford dealer tried to frick me out of 350 bucks for a second key.

Will call Pop A Lock this morning. If they can come to my house, cut a key, program a new FOB, maybe even set up a backup for half of the cost of the dealership, it's worth it. Plus I don't have to miss much work.

He may think it is an acronym like free on board aka FOB when it is just a word that comes from the pocket watch fobs.

I had a keyless fob stolen. Would I go through the same process to get a new one? If I lose the one I have left I am stuck.

Toyota wanted $95 for a valet key. Their keys seem pretty cheap but probably $200 for one with buttons.
Subaru wanted $225 for a replacement key for wife Outback

I ordered a replacement fob online from Car and Truck Remotes.
GM put the programming procedure in the manual. So I programmed the new fob myself in the garage.
I had to go to Ace Hardware to get the physical key cut since it’s the weird “high security” key that is the little line milled down the key.
Cost me about $150 vs the $350+ the dealership wanted.

should have posted the vehicle. some are easy; some are complicated. GM and Fords are probably the easiest. As alluded to, locksmiths are the best way to go if diy isn't doable.

this ^^^^^^
the majority of vehicles this is a cheap and relatively inexpensive thing to replace, however some select few vehicles it gets very pricey if you lose a key.
i didnt have a spare key for a volvo so it cost $40 to buy the key from dealer and then $350 to have it cut and programmed. there are only 2 volvo dealers withing 200 miles of me and the other one wanted $475 to do it

A lot of times you can just buy one on Amazon and take it in to your local locksmith. But I’d check ahead first.
