Houston has some of the most affordable rents among large cities, but the price of an average two-bedroom still may be out of reach for many. It takes an annual income of almost $47,000 to afford a two-bedroom apartment priced at $1,088, according to a report by financial website SmartAsset. The numbers are based on how much you'd need to earn so that your rent is no more than 28 percent of your income. The average Houston resident earned just under $26,000, according to U.S. Census data cited by SmartAsset.

Dallas renters pay more for apartments than Houston renters. Renters in North Texas would need to make a salary of $51,600 to afford the monthly rent of $1,204.

The income needed to pay rent for an average two-bedroom apartment in major cities:

1. San Francisco: $179,529
2. New York: $164,614
3. Boston: $135,686
4. Los Angeles: $109,543
5. Washington, D.C.: $103,543
6. Chicago: $96,600
7. Seattle: $87,786
8. Miami: $73,800
9. Philadelphia: $67,371
10. Riverside: $61,329
11. Atlanta: $53,914
12: Dallas: $51,600
13: Houston: $46,629
14: Detroit: $46,586
15. Phoenix: $41,057

All that is irrelevant for the OT

Nobody wants to live in a 2 bedroom in Atlanta, Dallas or Houston for 1000-1200. They're definitely in mediocre to outright sketchy areas.

I'm guessing it's a supply issue. If you look at Detroit on Google maps, you can see huge swaths of it have been basically leveled. Phoenix, not so much.

I've seen a lot of inner-city property for sale, and they've even allowed zoning for agricultural production. If the winters weren't so shitty, I'd give it a try.

Someone is probably going to make a fortune investing in undervalued real estate in the area. It wasn't the best city in America midway through the last century for no reason.

If by that you mean the effects of rent control, height restrictions, land use restrictions, and open space laws, then yes. Those laws are expensive.

Yes, that was clearly what I meant. How else could my statement have possibly been construed?

you can two-bed rooms in Montrose for that. Sure they aren't the greatest places to live but they exist.

Most people aren't living alone in a 2 bedroom rent house either so that metric is kind of stupid.

But Houston is such a big city. That may be the average, but you live in an average area for that. For people to live in a happening area, it's going to cost about double that. At least that's what I pay

Man, either my ability to be sarcastic is way off today or we desperately need a sarcasm font. Perhaps both.

As a resident of Houston, that is hard to believe. I'd like to know the neighborhoods/areas they surveyed.

Apples to apples for comparable neighborhoods would be ideal.

Not in my experience. They were more expensive when oil was up. I pay less now than I did when I moved here a few years ago.

You find a decent place to rent with a $2,000 budget. Houston is cheaper than Baton Rouge

Even those high rises over by you on Studemont are 2500-3k/month and they aren't even that nice.
