In Cleveland, MS, at least.
LINK
Once could be confusion. Twice in two years, right after the district was officially de-segregated and a combined school created? I think we have issues.

An African American woman filed a federal lawsuit against a recently desegregated Mississippi school district last week, claiming a white student was named salutatorian of their graduating class despite having a lower grade-point average.
The lawsuit comes weeks before a trial involving the same school district in which a black student alleges she was named “co-valedictorian” with a white student, even though the white student had a lower grade-point average.

From the small amount of details in the article is sounds like one of of them was taking honors classes and the other wasn’t.
Or maybe the other school she came from wasn’t that great and when they merged her gpa was adjusted which I think is fair but not her fault.

this goes on at just about every school and from what I've experienced, it has nothing to do with race, GTFO with that race baiting bullshite
ETA: my daughter was valedictorian at her hs, was one of two kids in the class that had gone there K-12(private school,) she skipped a grade so the runner up and her parents wanted to claim valedictorian because she didn't skip a grade, therefore had spent more money at the school, the officials were giving it serious considerations because of the deep pockets of the helicopter parents

Could also be political

Well I'm certainly convinced.

Any 'news' article about racism is 99% not believable

So the white student has a higher GPA when accounting for honors and AP.

I'm going to have to wait to hear the other side of the story. I'm so numb to fake racism claims that I doubt every claim now.

I know of a Louisiana small town high school that, to this day, has had alternating black / white homecoming queens every year since the 60s if locals tell the legend right. I witnessed it for my own 4 years of HS personally.

Student A was from the district "white" school and Student B was from the district "black" school. The schools merged.
Student B had her GPA "adjusted" while Student A did not.
Meanwhile, this district obviously has issues with race.
Try again.

Where did the article say that?

Did you read the article?
Looks like both students took "more challenging classes" but only one of them got their GPA adjusted.
quote:
In May, school officials told Olecia James, a black senior at the new high school, that her weighted grade-point average would be lowered after she lost “quality points” earned in courses taken at the historically black school, according to a federal suit filed in Mississippi’s Northern District. The suit alleges the points, awarded for more challenging classes, were taken from students at the historically black school, but not from students at the historically white school.

You can’t even summarize your own OP correctly.
Try again.

Right, most racism claims are bunk.
But this is pretty simple... the student with the higher GPA gets the award.
If both students are "new" to the school, because the school is technically new, and the black student had her GPA lowered while the white student did not, and shenanigans also occured the year before at the same school, and it's happened twice in the two years the school has been open, and the school system had to be desegregated in freaking 2017...
I mean... that's a lot of things to explain.
