With all the shoplifting and mob raiding of stores, I can see this business model coming back. For those who don’t remember, you went through a big showroom and wrote down the item numbers of things you wanted. At check out someone brought your items up from the back.

They had a great onsite jewelry repair service and a wishing well that you could throw a penny into.

The pickup lines were long as I remember. I stood in line for over an hour several times.

I worked at the one at Cortana during college. It was a fun job except at Christmas. Every day that time of the year you would swear there was a riot in the toy dept.

My brother and I pulled every dollar and coin we had and put them together. As soon as we had enough, we went to Service Merchandise and bought a Sega Genesis.

Our parents told us they weren’t buying it so we did it on our own. It was our first real world experience.

It's where I wrote my first check.

And I would love for a psychiatrist to explain to me why I remember more about the first time I wrote a check than I do the first time I had sex.

I remember brands that seemed familiar, but they really weren't and long wait times at the College store.

My Dad was the store manager at the one on College Drive in the early 80s. He went through a rough patch after losing his family business in the small town that we grew up in and he landed there for a few years to make ends meet. He rented a garage apt from an old lady in BTR and came home on his days off. We thought it was sooo cool until Christmas rolled around and all our presents were from the scratch and dent aisle. Fond memories of hanging out there with him.

It's fairly simple. You've repressed the memory of your uncle and that night because outside of Alabama it would be a rather traumatic event.

Loved Service Merchandise. Hated it when they started closing their stores I used to shop at the one in the mall in Enid OK.
