I think comedy clubs may be doing better now than a decade ago.
Podcasts, social media (especially TikTok and YouTube shorts), and the lack of good comedy movies has helped imo.
I see more references to comedy clubs these days than I ever did in the early 2000s.
Due to the very un-PC nature of good comedy, very few of these guys will get sitcom roles or movies, but there are lots of opportunities for stand up specials, and then you have people monetizing their comedy through Patreon as well.

I was working at a restaurant on Corporate in the early 2000s and someone from the Funny Bone came in with a big stack of free tickets to see Lewis Black. This was around the time when he was on The Daily Show all the time so people knew who he was. I guess they were having trouble selling tickets. I didn't go.

I went several times in the early 2000s, and every single time it would be some guy called the Erotic Hypnotic.

I think it was Funny Bone that had college nights with either free or tickets under $5. That part was great but there was also a drink order minimum they tried to enforce and the drinks weren't cheap.

I saw Ron White at the Funny Bone in Shitport. He was shitfaced.
In Lowell, AR they have a pretty good comedy club. David Spade was recently there.

Being funny is now racist and homophobic. All of the ists and phobics.

Networks just aren't giving out sitcoms like they did in the 80's and 90's. There's so much more reality TV, and the few sitcoms they do make don't really rely on comedic timing for live performance.
I forget who it was, but it was either on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee or Norm MacDonald Live, where some of the older guys were talking about the glory days when networks were giving sitcoms to any comedian who was decent and could show up on time to a meeting. Or else they could get a special on HBO or Showtime.
Those days are long gone, so there's less overall interest in comedy clubs. I can think of like 2 full time comedy clubs in Houston, compared to the 80's or 90's when older relatives went out to comedy shows all the time. I do see more regular bars hosting open mic nights and drawing decent crowds for those. But the comedians who show for it are just sharing tips or trying to score private gigs.

Wife and I go to the Houston Improv pretty often. They get some good acts and it’s fun. Food is overrated and drinks are expensive but it’s a good time.

Jason Leonard is doing strong work with Lafayette Comedy.
The Doubletree Hotel has turned 1 of their main conference rooms into a comedy club room with a full bar. Good acts are rolling thru.
