Relocation to Memphis

Work will be moving us to Memphis in August, we’re currently in BR. Anything OT’rs have anywhere we should check out? Night spots or hole in the walls we should plan to eat at? Anywhere besides the obvious places to avoid? We’ve made quite a few trips up.
Between the two of us it will be a little over 50% increase in salary, we are also closing on a house on Mud Island on Friday so housing is figured out. No kids. Late 20s.
I already have my bulletproof vest ready. Think that will be enough?

People constantly shite on this place, but I’ve been relatively happy in Memphis since moving here from Chicago two years ago.

Cordova, Germantown and Bartlett seem to be the nicer suburbs. I know midtown and harbor town are both nice too.
The airport is odd for being a big city. Very little activity and few flights relatively speaking for a city of its size.
I’m not a fan of the inclement weather that area gets, especially in the spring.

Since your going from Baton Rouge to Memphis you can probably take out your plates.

Stay away from Beale Street and you will be fine. That place makes Bourbon Street look like Wall Street. Suburbs are nice.

Not if it’s a head shot.

Probably a lateral move from a crime standpoint

Where is your job located, and what type of area are you looking to live in?

Elwood's Shack, Gus's, Hog and Hominy, and Bryant's for home cooking - there is a Gus's downtown, it is a fried chicken place - Elwood's is probably the 2nd closest to Mud Island

Job will be downtown. We are planning to close on a house Mud Island/Harbor Town area Friday.
We also looked heavily at Germantown and Collierville (our second choice by far) but without kids we figured we’d stay a little closer to downtown for now.

I went to some bar that had a big arse yard that was pretty cool. Also went to some brewery that was good. Had some shitty BBQ Mac n cheese

You will be within walking distance to buy some drugs or pussy on a street corner

From the island, you can easily get to the South Main area of downtown, or Overton Square and Cooper Young in Midtown. There are a lot of good spots to eat and drink at all of these places, and these 3 areas are where most of the activities and festivals are during spring time. When you get tired of being in the city and want some outdoor activities, Shelby Farms has really been improved over the last few years.
I live in Collierville with kids, so I haven't been hitting these areas of town the last couple of years like I used to

When I was laid over there a few years ago we went to Beale. It reminded me of a very clean and safe version of Bourbon St. Has that changed?

Sucks for you, can't wait for my fiancée to finish her residency next Summer and be done with Memphis. Outside of a very few restaurants/bars worth going to on a somewhat regular basis the place is as generic as it gets. At least you are closer to Nashville but after several years there is nothing about Memphis that I would miss.
