I accepted a offer and moving my family from Louisiana to Illinois. Plans were to pick up the moving truck Tuesday, load it up that day and leave Wednesday morning. Will be driving the moving truck and pulling my Truck, while the wife follows me and drives her vehicle.

With the weather currently looking anywhere from 12° to -6° and possibly snowing, should I try and push the trip back a few days to avoid those conditions? I've never traveled the roads for a long amount of time with weather like that. Just looking for some opinions on the matter. Any advice is appreciated.

No unfortunately not. Only for supervisor and above. But the move is well worth it financially.

The temperatures aren’t a problem, but the snow could be. I’m assuming you’d travel on interstate highways which will be fine if it’s a couple of inches of snow. If there is 6” or more, then could be miserable driving.

Where in Illinois? I did that 20+ years ago to get some experience before moving back. I worked there for 3 winters and wasn't going to work a 4th. I couldn't take the cold anymore. I'm just not built for it.

Upside, (23 years ago) the cost of living was dirt cheap compared to Louisiana. The people were pretty nice. Folks weren't as friendly and open initially when you meet but I met some great people while I was there. I got a lot of good experience that served me very well.

As long as you’re not driving in heavy snow you’ll be fine. They salt the roads and plows come through periodically when there is snow/ice. They can’t keep up when the snow is heavy, as I learned driving from Wisconsin to Nashville in that storm 2 weeks ago.

They keep I-55 clean. Go and stop at a Holiday Inn if it gets bad.

And get used to it.

Southern Illinois. About a hour east of St Louis Missouri. Cost of living is still super cheap there. And the facility where I'll be working is an indoor facility, so no worries about working in the elements.

Basically what i am doing. Going up there for 2 or 3 years to get experience and move back down and work for a larger Corporation.

Well obviously I don't know what income y'all are going from and moving to. Hopefully it's really significant and would blow my next statement out the water. Just that a lot of friends that I know that moved for what they thought were great financial bumps ended up basically at the same net pay with travel, cost of living estimates being off, renting to decide where to buy or buying and realizing you need to live on the other side of town. That type of stuff.

But seriously, best of luck and no, I would not drive a heavy moving truck in the snow/ice. if you do it for gods sake buy all the Insurance's and damage waivers they offer!!!

I can tell you moving all that stuff while pulling a truck is going to be a pain in good weather. When we moved back I was pulling the same setup. Made it all the way back to Baton Rouge and had someone pull out in front of me and slammed on their brakes to turn left. I almost hit her. Those conditions will make it much tougher to make the trip. If you do go plan on taking it slow and stopping overnight if you need to.

I went to work in Decatur. I was working as a controls technician. The market down here was flooded and they were glad to have me. Best thing I ever could have done. The move is still paying dividends.

For me to move anywhere north would have to be min double what I make now

And even at that, by the 5th or 6th time I’m shoveling snow and ice in -10 weather id probably just quit

When you drive through East St Louis make sure you stop and ask for directions.

Apreciate the advice. Yeah it just says "possible AM snow shower". Just gonna keep a eye on it and if it snows more and a few inches we will get a hotel.

We are renting before we buy so we can get a feel for the area. With that being said, we are renting a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom 2 car attached garage 2,200 sqf House for $750 a month. The same house here in Louisiana is renting for around $1,300. Plus I'll be making $40k more a year plus better benefits.

I would’ve hired a moving company myself. The moving across the country will be stressful enough. Learning a new area, schools, etc.
At least get that much off of your plate and have someone else worry about it

Cheapest moving company I found wanted around $2,800 i believe.

Getting the big Penske truck for $728 unlimited miles. Fuel is gonna run me around $200 for the trip.

Good travels and just be safe. Take queues from people around you if it gets bad. Drive cautiously just the same as your wife will. Hotel if needed.

The temperature isn’t a concern. How much snow are we talking about?

Unless it’s a heavy snow, you will be fine. Driving in the snow is no different than driving in the rain.

Whereabouts are you looking? Edwardsville and Collinsville are the biggest cities within striking distance of St. Louis. Good little towns to raise a family. Farther east, I have family in Greenville. They live on a nice fishing lake in a surprisingly large home that isn't outrageous. That city is a blip, imo, but it has some charm and is home to Greenville College. Carlisle and Highland have a bit to eat at. Are you on the I-70 corridor or I-64?
