Regulating Little Free Libraries

How does your city treat LFLs? Do they regulate them in anyway? Or do they just consider them a good thing for neighborhoods and leave them alone?
Because Shreveport is requiring them to be registered (with a $50 fee) and have a building plat and all that. It's utterly ridiculous.
I just want to know how other cities treat them or if this is just Shreveport being Shreveport.
Also, I'm sure the OT will hate these things since y'all hate everything, but one of my daughters favorite things is going for walks and stopping by the many LFLs in our neighborhood and getting a new book and putting one of her old books in there. I'd hate to see people stop building these things simply because the city feels the need to regulate every little goddamn thing.

There are cookbooks in the LFLs as well, so the city is keeping girls from learning how to cook.

That's a little extreme but the government loves its fees. We have many in Baton Rouge and I think there have been whispers of what to make of it but nothing has been officially brought up at the metro council.

I could see some regulations, like not putting them too close to a street or utilities. But the rest should be up to the property owner and HOA (if applicable.) Requiring a building permit is insane. They're pretty much just a glorified mailbox, as far as size goes.

And I think the concept is great by the way. Not only the encouraging reading aspect but that people generally walk or ride their bike to get there and it builds community which, as a nation we lack.

I'm cool with a fee, if they're using it to provide a service. I pay $20 so I can take my dog hiking off leash on about 85 miles of trails. The few pays for trail maintenance and signs.

the reasoning is the dumbest thing in the world
the city says that they could block driveways or traffic...like people are putting them in the middle of their driveway or in the streets?

I think they are insecure. I doubt the mayor or half the city council can read at a 3rd grade level.

To be fair, the Resolution hasn't passed (yet). And it won't apply to any existing LFL's just any new ones, so it's really more like Shreveport is saying "OK neighbors, enough is enough. We like what we have and don't want anymore."
It's ridiculous and absurd. I can see asking for certain setback regulations, etc, but instead of paying to register, why don't they levy fines if people don't follow the rules?

I like them. I have never taken a book from one yet. But I get rid of my old paperbacks through them. I actually have four books to get rid of right now. One being Dan Brown's Inferno (someone will like it). I see these things randomly and throw some books in.

People have them in the heights in Houston. But it's basically just a small bookshelf on a post in the front yard. Probably about 25 books on them. Is that what Shreveport is regulating?
