My Samsung refrigerator won't go lower than 54 degrees. The freezer seems to be fine. Any ideas?

If you have no ideas is there anyone you would recommend in Baton Rouge?

Edit to add model number: RF197ACRS

Samsung fridges are pieces of shite. Routinely get the lowest reliability ratings

I'm not Napolean, but my side-by-side was like that and I had to unfreeze the coils in the inside rear of the freezer section. The ice was blocking airflow to the refrigerator side. Probably the ice built up when the door was left ajar or power outage, etc.

This. I've had this issue before. You may try letting it thaw out completely.

I have seen this a couple of times also...it is a kind of a flaw in the way they are made, apparently.

I don't know if this matters but mine is not a side by side. It has the freezer drawer on bottom.

I can thaw it out but it has only been back on after the power outage for about 2 weeks.

Google is telling me it may be evaporator fan.

Try thawing first. Lot's cheaper. In mine, I can remove the back panel inside and see the coils. Then I run a hair dryer on them to speed up process. Removing panel is a bit of a pain though, so removing everything and giving it lots of time is easier. Just make sure it is all thawed.

Can you feel air flow from freezer side to fridge? Should be a vent somewhere bringing in cold air.

This may sound stupid but do you have a tall item blocking the vent in the back? If so that will cause the issue

They tend to go bad when exposed to 4' of river water.

What brands consistently make the best side-by-sides? I'm considering just getting the latest version of my old Whirlpool as a direct replacement. Just looking in the $900-1100 range, nothing fancy.

there are only a handful of US manufacturers, irregardless of the name on the appliance

If you have a single evaporator model (90% of all fridges) the freezer does all the work and the warm air from the freezer (which is around 35-40*) cools the fridge. If there is no circulation then their is likely a defrost failure which is the number one cause of fridge failure. On a samsung it's likely the heating element or temperature thermistor. I rarely change the Defrost control boards on those.

If it's a dual evaporator model then likely the fresh food(fridge side) fan is bad.

Just saw, you have a dual evap model, look for ice build up at bottom corners of fridge.

Press the door switches with your fingers and listen for the fan. If you don't hear it replace the fan. If the fan is good, you likely have a defrost failure.

If it was a sealed system failure your freezer wouldn't work either. The metering valve hardly ever fails so I don't think its a sealed system failure.

If you have no food in it, you could let it thaw for a full 24 hours with the doors open. If it works, then you know it was a defrost failure and you have three weeks to get it fixed before it ices up to the point of failure again.

thermostat 11-3 DA47-00243K - $13

Evap cover 9 DA97-11823A (includes fan this is what I use when replacing fan as I have to work on them iced and the panel comes out in pieces when there is ice holding it to the styrofoam) $75 It's so hard to take it off without breaking it. held on by plastic tabs.

prices wholesale but you can search model numbers I posted and get them on Amazon

it's going to be one of those things.

You have a huge evaporator in that fridge. If I recall correctly it is next to impossible to remove the back panel without breaking the styrofoam behind it. I know on a few Samsungs you have to replace the back panel pretty much any time you remove it.

Looking further if it's really iced up it can be a defrost system failure. You have a heater and thermostat in your fridge as well.

This is a really hard model for a DIYer to work on.

I can send you the pdf manual via email.

All the Whirlpool fridges are made in america now with the exception of the apartment style top freezer models that are made in Mexico, and some Thermidor and Kitchen Aides that are made in Turkey.
