I have no clue, that would be a DA’s job and Plaintiff lawyer’s job when you accidentally nuke someone in a car wreck. Just relaying the info when I thought paying $3 for a new bottle was too expensive. I decided against being cheap. DOTD and OSHA Regs apply if not others.
Info from a camping website below:
————————-
If you ever read the label on these bottles you will see that it says “Do not refill this bottle,” and “Do not transport refilled bottles.” Subject to $500,000 in fines and 5 years imprisonment.
I don’t believe the propane police are out hunting you down, but if an accident did happen and the tank was to blame, you could be in some serious trouble.
There's no firey explosion like you see on TV/movies (I've used them for target practice). The scene in Jaws where the shark explodes after Brody shoots the tank with a trusty M1 is fiction. It's just a rapid release of the product (which will propel the bottle). Now you throw it on a bonfire, you'll probably get an explosion.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s results on TicTok

I’d worry less about maximum volume and more about not blowing your face off.
This just seems like a bad idea. I'd rather just buy new coleman bottles.

Use a scale next time.
This.. sounds like the baw put way more than 1 lb of propane in his 1 lb bottles.

Are you sure they actually swelled up? The plastic base is covering up the rounded bottom of the cylinder so it’s able to stand up, is that what you’re seeing? I’ve done this a lot, and never had an issue. Like somebody else said, the pressure is going to stabilize once it’s full.
I've done it before too with no issues, was surprised when this happened. I know it is a common practice, so I just wanted to inform people (i got the idea from this board).

Just spend the money and get a hose which will allow you to hook your 20lb bottle to your Mr Buddy heater.

the bottle is alloy steel and a website says it has a pressure relief on it. It seems like the pressure relief would open before the bottle distorted.

That's what I did. I still refill some I use for my coleman Lantern though.
If you do get a hose for a Mr. Buddy, make sure it's the official Mr. Buddy one. Those cheap ones have some issue with what they are made from that will make the Mr. Buddy's stop working over time.

I've done it before with no problem, don't know what happened on these?
I have 5 heaters that I move around, so the 20 lb bottle is not an option.

Then you need to get the post which allows you to use your coleman lantern from your tank. That’s next level camping.

As far as lighting up a campsite or inside a camper I pretty much just use Solar light for the yard.
Set them outside and at dark turn them on. Very spottable as well with a ground spike and they last till bed time..

I have a rotation of about 10 bottles and have refilled them many many times. Never has anything swelled up or anything else bad. Most times they come out of the freezer too. I should probably be weighing them to make sure I'm not overfilling. Kinda hoped the safety valve would work if that ever happened.
Wonder if a contaminate got into your bottles. Thats really strange that it happened to 4 out of 5.

I just ordered a fitting to fill the little green one from a large one that has a gauge on it. I think it shows the pressure from the smaller one as empty, low and a larger area as it’s filling. Ordered off Amazon.
Haven’t used it yet to report on it.

I read a tip about putting the 1 lb bottles in the freezer before filing (it enables more propane to enter the bottle - due to temp difference between the two). Be careful if you do this, I filled 5 1 lb bottles getting ready for this upcoming cold snap, 4 of them swelled up so much I had to discard them.

I’d would imagine jacking off without hands is not very relaxing.

Car crashes can have fires. Do I think it would be likely…..no. I just decided to spend the extra few $ per year to buy the bottles new. There are DOTD approved refillable 1lb bottles online you can purchase as well. I didn’t use enough to justify doing that either. We used them for sporting events during the winter. Maybe 12 or 13 a year at most.
