Redevelopment along Canal Street is now a top economic development priority for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who has been working with business and civic interests on the commercial corridor's rebirth.

Cantrell laid out her plans Thursday (Oct. 18) with downtown property owners and residents during a meeting where she fielded a variety of questions about homelessness, quality of life and how to encourage property owners to fix up their buildings.

I hope it works but I think every mayor has tried to revitalize Canal St.

I applaud her for trying. I was in the FQ for a conference a few weeks ago, and granted it’s been a few years since I was there, but it just seems shadier and worse than ever. The dregs of society are just everywhere.

What does she plan to do with all the dead bodies and blood on Canal St?

Can we start with sprucing up the tent city under the interstate LaToya, maybe just spray off the shite and piss

Useually the plans are to get property owners to put the vacant buildings back into commerce and try to change some of the tenants.
The biggest thing that could be done is moving or providing 24 police presence to the bus stops on the corner of Rampart. A ton of shite has gone down there in the last couple of years.

Hopefully chasing out those tourist shops and beauty supply stores.
The Sazerac Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel coming up are a good start for revitalization of that area.

No I’m wondering what Latoya’s plans are.

This. Also she needs to have constant police presence at the corner of Canal and Elk. There’s always some a holes up to no good at that corner.

I never would have guessed the mayor of NOLA would be named LaToya...

It must start with getting all the connecting bus stops off of Canal. They have been there for generations and the blacks expect — no, demand — that they be there. Just hundreds of people hanging out on the corners waiting for the bus. Nobody wants to walk downtown in that shite.

No one mention Iberville yet?

Let’s get the city’s housing supply up

The 100 blocks of Royal and Chartres (between Canal and Iberville) are especially seedy.
ETA: about half an hour after I posted this, someone was fatally shot near the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville.

Agree with everyone about that bus stop. It’s like a watering hole in the jungle. All the animals gather there out of circumstance and then two that don’t like each other for some reason or just because of where they live see each other and Bang Bang. Absolutely blows my mind that people shoot each other in broad daylight with hundreds of witnesses but it is what they do. Need to move that large central stop and make it into a couple of smaller ones to keep those folks separated.

I find the place very Angry, people in general seem angry

The Canal Street of old is a long gone relic of when the City had a heavily Caucasian population. Gentrification doesn’t appear impactful enough to bring it back and the setup with the buses, property owners and tenants will make revitalization a tough act to pull off.
People with discretionary income need an incentive to go and unless you put in real measures to curb the crime and bolster the atmosphere any gains will only be short term.

It will never happen as long as Matwani owns half of canal st and populates his buildings with shitty t-shirt shops and convenience stores.
