I'm talking 2005-2007 beaters that will run me $4K-$6K.
Maybe look at a VW TDi

Meh - not much better than BMW.
Get you a Toyota Camry of that vintage - should last forever, relatively speaking.

The problem with European cars is repair costs. I have a Volvo that is a great car but the repairs can be expensive

2009 Camry - just had one in a estate we were handling - books clean at about 6000.

my family's beater cars:
honda accord 4 cyl, $4,500, 300K+ miles, 24 mpg hwy
honda accord 4 cyl, $2,700, 200k+ miles, 24 mpg hwy
honda accord 4 cys, $3,700, right at 200K miles, 28 mpg hwy
between them all: a couple batteries, brake jobs, and 1 leaking vtec module which was a $10 gasket 2 bolts and 30 minutes to fix.

Just took a new job with a decent commute and have been looking for a new beater as well. Pretty much leaning towards a Camry.

I put 179K on a camry but can't really recommend it. It was a 2007 and felt the quality of the interior fell to shite as well as having to replace the AC compressor multiple times.
Motor made a ton of noise at the end as well.

the answer is a subaru WRX. just watch the two-part Botwasna special of Top Gear and you'll get all the evidence you need.

50K miles per year
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things does not belong.
Shut up and get a Honda/Toyota car.

My '08 rav-4 has 200120 miles as of today. I haven't done anything to it. I only drive it 25k/yr.

Look for an Acura TL.

Stay as far away from anything European as you can. Average cost of a repair is extremely high as compared to other cars, even other imports. For example, a co-worker has a 2005 Audi A4 with a timing problem, the engine repair is over $6,000. Remember that same 2.0 turbo is in a lot of the VW models. I don't think their diesels would be much cheaper to fix.
If you are looking for a beater, like many have said, hard to go wrong with Toyota or Honda. May sound crazy, but look at something like a Crown Vic, if you can stand being seen in one. Mileage sucks on them, but they are dirt cheap to buy, (a 2007 might cost you around 2k) dirt cheap to fix, their part are as common as it gets, and they'll go for 200,000+ with ease. That V8 will run forever even if maintained somewhat poorly.
$4-5k actually gives you a lot of options that aren't beaters. Just stay away from cars that can generate repair costs that are more than the value of the car.

As long as gas is cheap, a Crown Vic is a great option. They were built to be cop cars and taxis, so they run for ever.

Found a 2004 TL for $5K. I'll probably get it cheaper since I'm coming with straight cash.
