What all the “become an hvac tech and then start your own business” people don’t understand is that if you had the drive, intelligence and work ethic to successfully start and run a trade business you could have gone white collar and successfully started and ran a professional firm making 5x more.

That sound you hear is the university system being crushed between the walls of artificial intelligence on one side and declining birth rates on the other. Pretty soon you’re going to have a lot of universities begging for students and then being shut down.

I agree that effort as people in hiring positions see it is at a low point. But I think it represents a culture shift. Who will win? I don't know. I look at job postings just to see what's out there for my experience/education/certs and I get kinda bummed. A lot of it has to do with purchasing power as well. Things are so much more expensive than they were even 7 years ago. But 7 years ago wages weren't that much different
I looked at 12 Month percentage change, all items, consumer price index. I don't have much time to do dig, so I chose a common item. Ground Chuck

12/2024 - 5.58
12/2018 - 3.71
% Increase - 50.4%
Weekly Earnings (Accountant, All People 16+)
2024 - 1553
2018 - 1209
% Increase - 28.5%
Obviously cursory and not a 1:1 comparison, but it's hard to see employers want candidates to bend over backward and expect a ton of effort when we're seeing what we have seen the past half decade.
Those who really want it will still rise, I believe that. But if a collective generation decides to say "frick it, we'll just be broke, frick you", what happens?

Yeah, if you can save enough making $50k to buy your own shite to open a business and then have enough cash flow to have $100k a year in payroll. Seems easy enough for someone with no secondary education

The cost of living dramatically increased the last 5 years. Yet pay for college grads have remained the same.
Then people like you are saying they are expecting too much pay.

Funny how so many companies in different industries these days are making more money than ever, yet many seem to believe so many of their employees aren’t worth what they’re “demanding”.
Somewhat related, it’s pretty annoying seeing execs at large companies complain about how they are struggling with retention or finding qualified new hires all while shoveling boat loads of cash each year into stock buybacks.
My very large international company has issues with an aging talent pool and have recently cut or curtailed a lot of “fringe” benefits. The company has practically never been in a better position financially, forecasts are strong and they have spent 3B on buying their own stock the past 3 years.
Somewhat related, it’s pretty annoying seeing execs at large companies complain about how they are struggling with retention or finding qualified new hires all while shoveling boat loads of cash each year into stock buybacks.

They are caused by each other
If you’re being paid the bare market rate, raise are 2% annually, and your jobs barely cover your bills. What loyalty do you owe to a company when the only way to get a raise is to move to a new job. Then your company decides they actually can afford a raise and beg you not to leave then it’s already too late.
This has happened to me and others countless times

I really do believe that this comes from a good place (and she’s far from alone). But from what I’m seeing (secondhand from my wife)…the way this plays out for a lot of families is an apathetic and unprepared kid being pushed along by a dogmatic parent (or parents) who “gets them to qualified” by doing application’s and letters for them and pressuring teachers and staff to pave the way. Parents have gone from “expecting kids to earn A’s” to “expecting K-12 to give them A’s so they can get into college”.
I don’t have any insights into what these kids end up doing once they get to college…maybe the lightbulb comes on at some point, but I’m sure a lot of them end up with lots of debt and nothing (or very little) to show for it.
We’ve taken your approach. If our kids want to go to college, they’re doing the work. We’ll help and guide and provide financial support but this is their mission, not ours.
We’re 1 for 2 with our adult kids. I’m projecting 2 for 4 once the little are grown.

I mean you could make millions in any field per se..but your premise wrong .. probably 95% or higher of the people in these fields haven’t made millions,.. Its not from a lack of hard work or dedication

All I was trying to say is that if someone does plumbing, hvac or electrical for their career and stays off drugs, your odds of being a multi millionaire are strong.
