Mates I’m an idiot - I backed into a trailer at Home Depot and when I pulled away my bumper (which got hooked) got torn off. The old chap who was driving the truck was a decent sort and likely MAGA AF - he put my bumper onto his trailer and followed me home and gave me a decent local body shop to try.

I have the bumper and foam inserts, but there are 2 punctures in bumper and some of the wiring for sensors got ripped along with lower lights cracked. Should I just go straight to insurance bc this damage will likely be over $1000 or should I see it a body shop can finesse this back?

I'm glad I read the post. At first I thought we had a Hulk-like car vandal running loose ripping off bumpers.

Whichever route you go, choose to use a new bumper. Don't try to finesse it back on. Bumpers are more important than you realize.

You also don't want the OT to hang the "Trashy" tag on you.

I've replaced the bumper to my truck before but admittedly it looks far easier than your situation.

Can you even find a bumper that matches the paint?

My decision would depend on how much longer I intend to hold the vehicle.

If I'm selling it soon, I'd just put it back together as best I could

I get a little sad when I remember you and I drive the same car. I hope I’m not as douchey as you are!

Make the insurance claim, don’t fix the damage and drive it as is. Profit. (Apparently a very common practice around La)

-Get an estimate from the body shop

-Look up your collision deductible

-Decide whether its worth it to file an insurance claim and keep in mind that this will be considered at at-fault accident which will likely impact your insurance rate for the next few years.

1. You have to get it fixed. You won't be getting your yearly tax receipt (brake tag) like that.

2. LOL x1000 if you think that is going to be anywhere in the neighborhood of $1,000. The body shop bill starts around $1k when you drive on the lot. Get an estimate and update the OP just for kicks.

3. Prepare thy anus for the insurance rate bump. This will end up costing you more in insurance rates than the damage which is a damn crime.

I have had some pretty rotten luck of late. I wasn't too surprised by this. How often does a collision at 4 MPG result in $3000 or so of damage?

Are you in the Baton Rouge area? I had someone run into my bumper and damage it on a Lexus and Kenny Allen’s Body Shop in Sorrento did a great job replacing it and matching the paint color.

EDIT: Never mind. My husband told me it closed.
