First, my alarm would go off.

Then, the Doberman would take some chunks out of him.

If he survived all of that and had thoughts of coming at me, yeah, I'd put the poor bastard out of his misery.

You shoot the intruder with the intention of killing him. You don't shoot to warn him, scare him, or announce your presence. And you certainly don't give him benefit of the doubt. As the other poster said, if he's in your home he's signaled his intent. frick him dead. Kill the motherfricker.

I'd hope I would have a chance to see the person first. That way you could at least rule out that it's a family member or friend who might have had one too many.

This is a big concern also. We live right by a bar in NOLA. One of my drunk arse friends comes stumbling in the house like an idiot and boom I have to live with that the rest of my life.

Well all circumstances are different. I can understand if you have multiple deterrence's, like an alarm, dog, etc. Also if you have a family and whatnot.

But we have none and live in a very social area with a bar nearby. People wander by the house at all hours of the night.

Nobody said anything about blasting away into the night. Spend your time confirming the identity of your intruder rather than his intentions or what he's carrying. You know your house better than he does. Use that advantage. Warning shots and hesitation remove that advantage. If you aren't comfortable enough to clear your home, find a good defensive position with good sight lines. Call the police and barricade yourself. Even better, have your wife talk the police through everything so you can stay focused.

Having kids on the other side of the house changes things, and you should at least be comfortable clearing to them.

What would be a rational response besides the inevitable "I'd blow that frickers head off, etc, etc"?

You should always ask them if they know how to play Texas Holdem and tell them you have a case of beer in the fridge. Whether they answer yes or no, step into the room they are in and unload your gun into them.

Is this a troll thread? Someone breaks into your house while you are there and you want to have tea with them?

I think I'd be too terrified I'd mistakenly shoot a roommate or a friend that I would never win a gun fight with an intruder.

DisplacedBuckeye's scenario is exactly as mine. Same layers of security and response to an intruder.

Life is all about choices. An individual that has broken into a house has made their choice. They decided that breaking in is worth the risk of dying.

You are under no obligation to give them a 2nd chance to rectify that choice.

frick em.

Worst thing to do. Don't go hunt for him but if he comes in yall's room, fire away.

This needed to be repeated.

Going after somebody blind in the dark is an excellent way to get injured or killed.

Call 911, stay in your room on the phone. Shoot anyone who breaches the door.

Trying to save your TV from being stolen isn't worth the risk of clearing the house.

I would not want to kill anyone for any reason and my dog would likely work the intruder over making it unnecessary, but if someone is intruding in my house I would shoot them.

Also choose your weapon carefully. If you are staying stationary in your safe room during the event (like you should) then there is no reason to compromise with a handgun. A shotgun of some type is an excellent choice HOWEVER, you will still need to aim as there will be almost no pattern spread in the distance found in a typical room.

I didn't read any of that. The answer is shoot him, make sure he's facing you, and put his prints on your biggest knife

And I can't stress this enough: Know of a lawyer you can call day or night if such an event were to occur. And DON'T talk to the police without having that lawyer present. There are prepared statements that can be found online that you can print and hand to the police while waiting for your lawyer.

Read the paragraph above again.

IMO that's awfully risky to wait until you can identify someone in the dark. You give them the opportunity to see where you are possibly.

It's easy to say all of this sitting here at the computer. But when your heart is pounding, adrenaline rushing, and in a completely unfamiliar position, expecting to stay calm, cool, and collective, identify the intruder as they walk into your room and make the decision within a second or two whether to take their life....

That's asking alot IMO.

what if it's police serving a no knock warrant on the wrong house? what if it's your shifty brother Bob who just decided to show up for a visit?

I see no problem in yelling out a warning to someone while you are in your safe room with your weapon trained on the door. Doing so while on the phone with 911 could also help you if legal action occurs afterwards.

IMO there's 2 options.

You yell a warning to see who it is or give them a chance to leave. If not you fire at first sight.

Or

You stay quiet and fire at first sight.

I don't think the circumstances allow for anything else unless you're just a calm motherfricker or have been in similar situations.

Option #1 is only prudent if you are in your safe room.

Dude would literally have to kill my dog to get more than two steps into my home. I have a zero tolerance policy on breaking into my home and killing my dog
