I've been thinking about this more and more lately. Say you have a gun and in the middle of the night you hear someone break in.

My gf and I live in a shotgun (no pun intended) style house, where our bedroom is in the middle. The kitchen and back door is in the back of the house and the living room and front door in the front (obviously). So basically we're sitting in the middle and either way would encounter the intruder as they walk through the house.

What would be a rational response besides the inevitable "I'd blow that frickers head off, etc, etc"?

Do you yell a warning that you are armed and fire a warning shot into the roof or floor hoping they flee?

Do you warn them you are armed and if they step in the room fire away?

Although you have every right to shoot a home intruder, I'd like to think most people would rather not have to kill someone and would do everything necessary to prevent that, not to mention the legal bullshite you would have to deal with?

Or am I giving the OT too much credit here?

If someone has broken into my house, I have no choice but to assume they mean my family harm. They don't get the benefit of a warning.

They're in my house. In the middle of the night.

I'm shooting first and asking questions later.

No, you shoot to kill not to warn.

That's fine, but if there was an option to not have to shoot someone, would you rather it?

I mean, would you hunker down and hide and try to surprise the intruder? Would you yell something first? Would you run out guns a blazing?

There's more to it than just "shoot first ask questions later".

I'm not surrendering tactical advantage. I know my floorplan, I'm leaving lights off and I'm shooting him as he comes up the stairs (in your case, the hallway).

I have an alarm that goes off instantaneously if any exterior door or window is open. I've got a Glock 22 in my nightstand and an AR-15 with two 30 rounds mags attached in the closet.

The alarm is so loud, I doubt anyone could hear me scream that I'm armed. I'd probably set up at the corner of our bedroom door, and anyone coming down the hallway is getting blasted.

The way my house is laid out, there are 2 exits from my bedroom. One routes through bathroom to closet to laundry room to other side of house.

I would take whichever route it takes to get the drop on them and shoot them

A related story: About 40 years ago when my mom was pregnant with my older sister, some Jamaican guys bust in their apt with guns. My dad was upstairs and my mom, aunt, and cousins were downstairs.

My dad came down with a gun and the guys already had the rest of the family held up at gunpoint. They told my dad to drop the gun, which he did, they tied em up and proceeded to rob the place.

I feel like if my dad would've came down guns blazing many people would've died that night.

Sometimes it's not as simple as shoot first ask questions later.

Then I'm calling 911 to tell them "someone broke in my house and I fired a shot at them. I don't know if I hit them or not, but I don't hear them anymore. Maybe I scared them away. Please send the police. I'm hiding in my bedroom."

Luckily I live alone.

Removes all doubt from the equation for me.

This. Shouting something gives them knowledge of where you are. If they do mean you harm or don't intend on leaving without getting what they were looking for, you've now lost a huge advantage. And warning shots? Hell no. Again, you don't know who or what you are dealing with.

Worst thing to do. Don't go hunt for him but if he comes in yall's room, fire away.

Wrong. I have no idea why someone would break into my home, and I'm not waiting around to find out.

I give every opportunity not to come into my house. The first is my property line. I own it. You don't. Second, there is my front door. It's closed. Don't open it. Third, there is a lock on it. Leave it locked. Fourth, I have a dog that will let me know you are there. If you hear him, so do I. Go ahead and leave. Fifth, is my alarm. That isn't there to let the cops know to come get you. It's there to let me know you missed 1-4. Sixth is the threshold into my home. Again, I paid for it. You didn't. If you make it through all of that, and still decide you would like to illegally enter my home, it doesn't matter to me if you have a gun in your hand or an ice cream cone. I'm not waiting to find out if you intend my family harm, or if you just really like my TV.

I'd hope I would have a chance to see the person first. That way you could at least rule out that it's a family member or friend who might have had one too many.

In a house like ours it's not much of a guess where the bedroom would be. It's a shotgun house so there's like 3 partitions. In a small house like this I feel like yelling and firing a warning shot wouldn't give much away. They still have to walk in the room and don't know exactly where you are. If anything I feel like it lets them know you are indeed armed and aren't fricking around.
