IMO that's awfully risky to wait until you can identify someone in the dark. You give them the opportunity to see where you are possibly.

That's what weapon lights and proper training in their use are for. There are other ways as well. Any type of intermediate defense training will address that.

It's easy to say all of this sitting here at the computer.

I was a Recon Marine for 10 years. For me, it's as easy to say in Anbar or Helmand. As I said, you should do what your training permits. If you feel that's adequate, it's your decision.

That's asking alot IMO.

Using a firearm against another always is.

Ok, well that explains your strategy.I just don't think that's reasonable for the average Joe.

I've been thinking about this scenario, and I'm basically screwed should someone kick down my front door. The wife and I's room is in the back, while the kid's rooms are in the front near the door. So I have to go and attack while the wife gathers the kids.

I need to get a good, big dog. The little shite I have now would just annoy any intruder.

That's fine, but if there was an option to not have to shoot someone, would you rather it?

Yes I would rather that option, but once they set foot in my home that option went south. No warning shot, maybe afterward.

Only read the OP.

I have a handgun and a CCL.

Someone kicks my door in and I'm blowing their head off. I'm not trying to sound like a badass, but I live alone and my gun is on my nightstand. I'm not fricking around.

You kick my door in and expect to get shot. What's fair is fair, right? Me shooting an intruder would completely hold up in court, as long as "I feared for my life". The BRPD SWAT team taught my CCL class. I know exactly what to say.

I pray that I never have to shoot someone, but I won't if it comes down to my life vs theirs

Of course it is. I assume, or at least hope, you train with your firearms. You don't need to be better than everyone. You just need to be better than the person that just broke into your house. You have a huge advantage from the start. Training and education only increases that gap.

I'm not necessarily trying to convince you. I'm just discussing. As I've said repeatedly, do what you feel works for you. I'm not the one that has to deal with your actions.

We have a lab/mastiff mix that we got from a mastiff rescue program as a pup. He is extremely affectionate, loyal and can be such a goof ball that I constantly find myself laughing out loud at him. He is a very good judge of character and instinctively protective of my wife, myself and our home. There is a seriousness about him that I have only seen arise very seldomly and appropriately. These types of dogs really aren't uncommon but are completely invaluable.

Basically everything displaced buckeye has said has been spot on. I think his advice and adding the right sort of dog to your family is about as good as it gets

Do you have a gun? If so, it sounds like you want to invest in a good weapon light with a strobe function. 300-400 lumens minimum. That let's them know that you see them, it will blind them and, since it's weapon mounted, you've already got a bead on them should it come to that. I'm not saying that's the only answer but it sounds like it's probably the best fit for you given a few of your responses that I read.

Probably not if this happens in your own home.

frick that. I'll shoot him in the back 10 times out of 10. I have no idea if he put his weapon down to snatch my tv and now he's going for it.

I would blow their brains out. Then dig a hole with the excavator on an isolated part of my land and dump him in. Start a tire fire and cover up with dirt. Wouldn't call the cops but that's just me.

First, you should have a plan, and you should practice that plan every few months. The wife and I (no kids), have a plan, we take turns randomly announcing a drill and we practice the plan. One of us has a task of calling 911 while arming themselves, while the other covers the other one. The phone caller has a Glock 17, the other a Dan Wesson shotgun and a 45 for follow upas after the shotgun has done its job. We have concealment locations where we hunker down and wait. There are no warnings.
