That and their energy storage efficiency needs a decent improvement to take a swing at Tesla.
This is not off base and well reasoned. It was more just calling it crap that I responded to, they have strides to make but also are more affordable than a Tesla if you want a speed friendly EV. I have ridden in one and had one reserved but it was at a time after the old incentives fell off and new ones renewed/kicked in so I would have overpaid... so I stuck with an ICE. Ill let the tech improve across the board.

Crap was probably too strong as a vehicle in general.
Crap for a rental car is probably fair given the efficiency and lack of infrastructure.

You planned poorly. I'm pro EV and would have told you not to rent one to drive from Vegas to the dam
Uh, if you can't do something like this then the vehicle is worthless.

EVs aren't for everyone yet. I agree that you have to evaluate that with where you live. That being said, there are whole YT channels where someone is testing EVs in cold conditions. The amount of data available to the average person is astounding.

rented a tesla recently, and 100% hated the experience. Won't ever do that again unless i know i'll be driving less than 100 miles total.
That being said, i am all for having an EV as my home vehicle to drive around the city, if i was into driving cars, which i am not. i'm too tall to drive a car again. I can't stand having to fall into my seat, and then having to basically jump out of the seat to get out.

The vast majority of EV owners don’t give 3 fricks about their carbon footprint. They buy them because they’re high tech, fun cars that work for their lifestyle.
Maybe so but the government mandates and rebates are all based on the carbon footprint lie.

A Secretary of Transportation so fricking inept, the average citizen actually knows who it is.

A 8.5 hour trip from North Mississippi to Florida would take me 12 hours on that electric shite. Imagine hurricane evacuations in the future and half the people run out of charge clogging up the highways. This is a mess waiting to happen.

Here I am looking at the "EVs are fricking worthless" group not getting how they don't see how EVs make a great deal of sense for certain parts of this country.
And here I am looking at the EV evangelistas saying EVs are the future of teh everything! and not getting how they don't see how EVs make absolutely zero sense for certain parts of this country.
It's almost like not everyone lives the same lifestyle and location in this gigantic fricking country.

Imagine taking off 2 months for maternity leave without actually having a baby.

EV could make sense if you charged at home every night, had a commute that was within the range and had a second vehicle for road trips.
Now the concept of the Rav 4 prime, a plug in hybrid that is performance oriented brought to a full size truck or SUV might get me into one of those, or even bring that drivetrain to a corolla and make it a hot hatch would get me interested.
As it is now, I plan for my next vehicle to be a 5 year old luxuriously appointed full size SUV. You find one with low miles, drive it 2-3 years and sell it for what you paid for it or at least close to it as long as you take care of it. I'll probably get more cash for my SUV I have now than I paid for it before covid when I upgrade.

Solid state batteries, whenever they come out, will be what really gets people into electric. Give it 5 years. Batteries on a full charge going 500 miles and taking 15 mins to charge. That's the future. Right now it feels like a dry run.

.....but but but who's going to tell the ChiComs and Ruskies they have to go all electric also?
I know, send Lurch (aka John Kerry) to break the news to them.

There's a ton of new options for storage coming out in the coming years. It'll be interesting how the new solutions solve issues and if that comes back around on things like cycle life.

So we should completely dismiss the tech because of this?

They are building out charging infrastructure.
They are developing battery swap tech for 5 minute "refuels". I believe these are popular with taxi and bus fleets.
They are developing grid-tied EV chargers, which will allow them to more efficiently utilize all the wind and solar power they're installing.
China is going to win this race. They are going to beat the dog shite out of us. They are going to reach the critical mass of EVs and continue pushing down the cost of renewables and batteries, and as a result the cost of literally everything else (everything is energy and energy is everything). Their economy is going to shift into another gear.

Grabbed an electric at Hertz in L.A. it was fun enough to drive, but I had a hard time finding charging stations that functioned or weren’t blocked in by old beater cars.
I had to drive back to LAX at 4am and made it with about 20 miles left.
Would NOT recommend.

No one has ever said that. It's the overregulation of ICE and dictating of EVs in support of fake science for enrichment of a few is the problem.
