Mount McKinley is within our borders, so he can absolutely do that. On the Gulf, probably not officially, but nothing will stop us from calling it that, especially the close to land areas within US territory, mineral and mining rights.

We can call it whatever we want, Mexico can do whatever they want.

Lake Walter F. George is called Lake Eufaula by Eufaula residents.

Who do you think named it the gulf of Mexico? You think it was called that when Columbus arrived?

Does a president have the power to exonerate people before they are accused of wrongdoing or before their crimes come to light?

why does a president have the ability to do this?

Well… you could even do it yourself. It’s within your power to make everyone in your household call the Gulf of America the Sea of Kalunda if you want. All you need is other people to just go along with it.

Did Congress name it GOM?

The name Gulf of Mexico not only predates the United States, it predates the birth of the founding fathers and probably the birth of most of their parents.

I find this sort of like calling french fries, freedom fries. Go ahead and do it but it will always be the Gulf of Mexico to me.

There will be a whole lot of expense involved for companies who have the Gulf Of Mexico in documents and such like every O&G-related company that works in the Gulf.

It sort of seems like the flip side of renaming streets and removing statues to me.

In terms of internationally, The International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) oversees the uniform charting and naming of the world’s seas, oceans, and navigable waters. The US is a member of the organization.

Executive orders are an overreach of power

But are executive orders to undue a previous executive order an overrrach or righting a previous wrong?

We can call it whatever we damn well please. If another country wants to call it something - have at it.
