Real Talk About Bullying

My friend's son is in middle school and is getting bullied. The father is obviously upset. Kid is a good kid, but absolutely a bit of an outlier. He has plenty of friends but would likely never win any homecoming king competitions.
Father is demanding that the school "do something". Plenty of other parents chime in, backing his calls, and sharing their own stories of these kids being bullied. It's all very sad. Other parents also demand school "do something".
Parents are all acting as if this is some new thing that if the schools just "do something" it will take care of itself.
I feel bad for the family, and I know there is a chance when my own kids get into middle school, they could be bullied (or be the bully). We talk to our kids about treating everyone with respect, that they don't have to be friends with everyone, but there is a base level of respect to show everyone.
Parents can do a better job, sure, but even then... we are all fighting biology, and that usually never works.
Kid has been previously suspended because he beat up one of the other kids bullying him. That doesn't appear to have stopped the bullying. Parent has told child to try not to administer a second arse-whipping.
The O-T is probably the wrong place for this, but if this parent was a friend of yours, what would you tell him (if anything).

Get rid of zero tolerance and let the boys throw down occasionally.

The do something is walk up to the biggest bully and sock his arse right in the nose.

Bullying is good for social growth. Prove me wrong

I can’t fault the father for raising serious concerns in a world where more kids seem to think suicide is okay than ever before. I’d be more concerned if the father didn’t give a shite. Let him be a good, concerned dad.

His friends should catch the bully in the street and beat the crap out of him until he stops.
Honestly, as a teacher, there is only so much we can do. We can separate kids as much as possible, but with the rise of social media, most bullying is done online.

What's funny is a lot of these other parents are chiming in with "there needs to be zero tolerance for bullying!!"
I'm with you. Let the boys beat the crap out of each other and move on.

I sort of see your point. Without bullying you will never realize how weird you are. It gives you a chance to fix things before you grow up to be a complete weirdo.

I’ll always tell my kids to not throw the first punch. But to make damn sure they throw the last one.

Better tell your friend to have his son sack up or this will happen

I have daughters. One day, one of them may well get bullied. They aren't that old yet.

Wouldn’t happen in catholic school
Posted on 10/17/18 at 11:53 am to LSUFanHouston
this is why it's important to be the bully early one and establish dominance

I'll tell you what they could do... bring back detention for fighting instead of expulsion. Let those kids punch the bullies right in the fricking dick and they'd knock that shite off.
Kids are too damn scared to defend themselves now.
