Yeah but this is a real I’d. Not some phony card you already have and use to prove your age and drive a car.

I remember it being a royal pain in the arse to get everything for my passport, etc. Is it similar?

You didn’t have to go get a special id to fly within this country.

How is this flying over your head?

What's onerous about this?

The onerous part is obtaining one. In Alabama, you can only get it at certain offices, available appointments have been scarce at times, and a few other issues. I'd guess most other states have had similar issues. It's one reason they've extended the deadline several times.

REAL ID cost more and must have more ways of proving you are you when you get one...

I'm glad I've yet to pay the extra for it.

Why can't Congress be bothered to admit a mistake and repeal the legislation?

Who knows? It might even be popular!

They should just disband the Department of Homeland Security.

True story: my license was up for renewal in July, so I decided to go ahead and get the new ID. Brought my passport.

Lady: Sir i need your social security card or birth certificate.
Me: (perplexed) Um, I have my passport.
Lady: I’m sorry sir, but j need one of those documents in addition to your passport.
Me: You do understand that in order to obtain my passport I have to submit my social security card and birth certificate to the state department, right?
Lady: (clearly doesn’t.)

These people are stupid.

They are stupid. But I thought you could use your passport instead of a real Id when or if it does go in.

My current passport expires after my current license so I always figured I had time.

I've had to show ID for flying for years, I can't remember not having to do it.

You may not remember all you had to do in order to get your ID in the first place, but it's a pain in the arse no matter what.

What do I have to submit that is "special?"

It's basically a passport they attach as part of your driver's license. It's only good for domestic air travel though, so you'll still need a passport to fly internationally. But you can still use your passport in lieu of the Star ID for domestic air travel.

Beginning May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.

WTF? You mean I've been showing my ID this entire time and was not legally obligated to?

In all actuality, there are other ways they can use to verify your identity. But using your license makes it a lot less painful.
