whats the point of this? They've extended it about 4 times now. Just give it up already.

They called for this in 2005 and it still hasn't happened. 100% the current Administration doesn't want this to hamper illegal aliens getting ID's. So frick all citizens and their potential safety. Now I want a terrorist to get caught with a fake DL just to shine light on this mess.

are you dumb...I have a real ID...I really dont think my litte star sticker I got from brining in 2 additional documents is keeping this country any safer

Congress passed the requirement in 2005

That's about on par for the government. At this rate I'll probably never need one

The problem, at least here in Alabama, is only certain DMV’s can issue them and appointments have been hard to secure. And at some locations, even with an appointment there’s no guarantee you’ll be processed that day.

I’ll just use my passport

And the same government that claims IDs are racist, are also requiring you to spend more money on another ID because your state issued ID that you already have isn’t good enough

Haven't gotten it, not gonna get it. Did/do not want the headache of having to deal with the DMV. I have a Passport Card, which is equivalent to a "Real ID" for domestic travel. Much easier to renew by mail every 10 years when I renew my passport.

I think I have a compliant ID and frankly don't recall doing anything special to get it. Wasn't even trying. Not sure what happened there.

Can someone explain what the purpose for that was/is?

Federal government needs their ID approval?

Dubya got re-elected in 2004 on his War on Terror platform. He got 50 percent of the vote, and proclaimed he had a "mandate" to govern.

During that year's Congressional session, the GOP had a hefty package of bills they wanted to pass. One of which was the partial privatization of Social Security, which floundered.

On the other hand, a lot of seemingly insignificant but burdensome bills got pushed through because it appeased the security theater that was in vogue at the time (e.g. the color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System was still in use at the time).

We were still pretty much willing to do anything to "not have another 9/11" not matter how stupid it was, so stuff like this got passed.

I would think this would be racist. What about minorities that can't afford a REAL ID or don't know how to get one? Someone needs to call DHS's hand on their racist policies!

Yes but there were a few states, I think Missouri was one, that didn’t meet it, then covid pushed it back further.

I'll support just about anything that limits who can fly. It's already bad enough.

I think it depends on the state of issuance. IRCC there were a few states whose standards for their drivers license didn’t qualify but that was a few years ago.

It goes back a little further. After TWA 800, there was apparently pressure to increase airport security, even though that was deemed an accident. The Clinton administration started the ID requirement to fly. Of course, if you can fly under a fake ID/name, that's worthless, hence your post.

I actually worked on the privacy impact assessment for TWIC in 2006/2007. Complete fricking joke, totally just checking a box, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. We had a DAILY conference call for the overall project that had 30-40 people on it for 2-3 hours a day, that didn't accomplish diddly poo. That project caused me to ask they stop trying to renew my TS clearance, as I was never going to work on another federal project again.
